The Electrical Trades Union is the principal trade union for electrical, electronic, and communications trades in Australia. With over 60,000 members, the ETU is foremost in protecting, advancing, and developing skilled electrical trades throughout all aspects of vocational education.

The ETU seeks to engage a Technical Officer. The Technical Officer will collaborate closely with National Office staff to represent the Union in the vocational education space, including with respect to engagement with Jobs and Skills Councils (JSC’s) and all relevant training packages working alongside the National Technical Officer.

In addition, the Technical Officer when required, will assist the ETU on Australian Standards committees, ensuring that industry standards are improved and there is no derogation of workplace safety, as well as providing assistance to the ETU’s broader national policy engagement and advocacy work from time to time.

The position will also involve advising the National Secretary and Executive on all aspects of vocational education as it applies to our trades.

The successful applicant should have experience in one or more of the Australian ElectroComms and Energy Utilities Industry sectors, an extensive knowledge of the Australian Vocational Education and Training System, strong communication skills and demonstrable ability to work in a team environment and support the ETU’s operations.

The ETU offers a competitive salary, 17.8% superannuation, and generous leave entitlements. The role is for a fixed term of 12 months and is full time, but we are open to considering part-time arrangements.

The role is Sydney based but would consider remote working.

Position Requirements:

  • Support the development and revision of the suite of electrotechnology Training Packages.
  • Represent the Union in all relevant areas of the VET system.
  • Build and maintain key strategic relationships with industry, Government, and other unions.
  • Undertake research and reporting activities to support the ETU’s operations.
  • Prepare detailed briefings, submissions and supporting collateral on behalf of the Union.

Selection Criteria:

Experience in one or more of the Australian ElectroComms and Energy Utilities Industry sectors.

Demonstrable understanding of National and State/territory VET Systems.

Demonstrable ability to support the ETU leadership and National Executive

Demonstrable experience in:

  • liaising with VET Stakeholder groups, such as: industry, industry regulatory authorities, state training authorises, government agencies, registered training organisations, industry representative bodies (i.e. Employer Associations, Unions);
  • technical writing; and
  • oral, written, and electronic communication.

Demonstrable technical working knowledge of relevant Training Packages, in particular UEE and ideally also UEP and UET.

Mandatory attributes:

  • willingness to comply with ETU policies and procedures;
  • willingness to report to the ETU’s leadership;
  • willingness to travel interstate when required;
  • ability to work both autonomously and in teams
  • outcome driven, with high work ethic; and
  • ability to facilitate, present at and/or participate in meetings, functions and conferences.
