Representing our membership from across Australia, NIETA advocates for policies and programs which are tailored to meet the needs of Indigenous job seekers and communities and seeks to support the growth of the Indigenous led employment and training sectors.

The Role

The Board of NIETA are seeking a dynamic and visionary Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander CEO to lead and develop the organisation whilst actively pursuing our advocacy agenda. The CEO will be responsible for the strategic direction, growth, and operational excellence of the organisation. This role will lead a transformative initiative that will have a lasting impact on Indigenous employment and training.

The successful candidate will be able to work from any capital city (or other locations by negotiation), managing a remote team and will be required to undertake regular travel within Australia.

Key responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

Strategic Leadership. Developing and executing a strategic plan that aligns with the mission and objectives of NIETA and providing visionary leadership driving innovation and growth to the Aboriginal and Torres Trait Islander employment and training sector.

Advocacy & Representation. Be the voice and face of NIETA. Represent the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and training providers and communities to government agencies, corporate partner and the public. Advocate for policies, resources and reform to support the effective design and delivery of employment and training policy and programs for Indigenous people

Stakeholder Engagement. Build and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders such as government entities, industry partners, Indigenous organisations and community leaders. Collaborate with stakeholders to identify opportunities for partnership, investment and capacity building. Cultivate and grow NIETA’s membership base.

Governance & Operational Excellence. Ensure effective day-to-day operations of NIETA, including management of finances, governance, compliance with relevant regulations, leading an engaged team, and developing policies, procedures and establishing a technological environment that supports and enhances the organisations effectiveness.

Selection Criteria

In this position, it is a genuine occupational requirement that this position be filled by a First Nations person. The filling of this vacancy is intended to constitute an affirmative measure under subsection 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.

  • A deep commitment to advancing the economic interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through employment and training.
  • Proven executive leadership experience, ideally in a non-profit organization, business development, or Indigenous-focused entity.
  • An understanding of Indigenous employment and training issues, challenges, and opportunities.
  • Significant experience in advocacy and policy experience across Federal / State Governments
  • Political and representational skills and the ability to manoeuvre through complex political situations effectively
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, including the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and represent the organisation effectively.
  • Strong financial acumen and budget management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the capacity to develop strong and effective policy documents
  • Highly developed organisational and problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple project simultaneously
  • Experience leading and developing an engaged team including management of subcontractors
