Canberra Community Law is a leading not for profit community legal centre in the ACT and its region committed to social justice and human rights. They are seeking a Solicitor to join their Dhurrawang Aboriginal Human Rights Program (Dhurrawang). Dhurrawang provides services in housing, social security, and race discrimination law to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the ACT.
The Dhurrawang program is culturally competent and informed by the human rights principles of participation, inclusion, and self-determination. They assist clients to access housing, social security and challenge race discrimination through a culturally informed practice that utilises human rights laws and principles of advocacy, law reform and community education.
We are seeking an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Solicitor to work in the Dhurrawang team. The Dhurrawang Solicitor will provide legal services to Dhurrawang’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
This assistance may include providing outreach services, warm referrals, discrete legal services, ongoing casework assistance and representing clients in Tribunal/Court matters. The Dhurrawang Solicitor also works with our Social Worker and Disability Justice Liaison Officer to provide holistic services to Dhurrawang’s clients.
The position will also involve undertaking community legal education training and activities, attending stakeholder forums, and working on law reform and community development projects.
This position is only available to candidates who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
Canberra Community Law considers that being an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under subsection 42(b) of the Discrimination Act 1991 (ACT).
You will have demonstrated understanding of the issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with a commitment to social justice and human rights and capacity to advocate for and work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and communities in a specialist practice.
You will have a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team under the supervision of Dhurrawang’s Supervising Solicitor and the ability to work with and supervise volunteers and students.
You will be a holder of or eligible for, a practicing solicitor certificate in the ACT and hold a current driver’s license.
Experience working in a community-based environment, alongside involvement in working with Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander clients and communities is desirable.
