About us

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation is a Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) appointed under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (Vic.). We represent the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Traditional Custodians of Melbourne and the Greater Melbourne region, and we take great pride in our responsibility for protecting and managing Aboriginal cultural heritage objects and places on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country. The Corporation offers a range of other cultural services including environmental land management, cross-cultural education, traditional Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremonies, research, and cultural consultations.

Purpose

The Heritage Advisor supports the functioning of the Cultural Heritage Unit and its delivery of Wurundjeri Corporation’s statutory responsibilities to protect and manage Aboriginal cultural heritage on Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung Country. Your role is responsible for providing support to meet the Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) responsibilities in accordance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and the Aboriginal Heritage Regulations 2018, including evaluating Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs) and Cultural Heritage Permits (CHPs). This role works closely with Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elders and members to deliver outcomes.

Key responsibilities

  • Evaluating Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs), Cultural Heritage Permits (CHPs) and other heritage agreements in accordance with the prescribed requirements and timeframes under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006.
  • Facilitating meetings, consulting and engaging with key stakeholders, project sponsors, external Heritage Advisors, Elders of the Corporation and various government and private sector business organisations.
  • Supporting the development and delivery of Cultural Heritage Unit projects in a timely manner.
  • From time-to-time, undertake survey, excavation, site recording and registration.
  • Responding to directions issued by the Cultural Heritage Unit Elders and Cultural Heritage Unit Manager.
  • Supporting the provision of internal legislative advice regarding the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and the Aboriginal Heritage Regulations 2018.
  • Support a team environment that fosters and develops effective working relationships and a high-quality performance culture.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with the Wurundjeri Elders, Wurundjeri staff and other stakeholders as required to perform your role.
  • Advocate for Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung rights and interests as Traditional Custodians and act as a role model for the Wurundjeri Corporation in all that you do.

About you

Education and qualifications (or equivalent level of learning)

  • A graduate degree with Honours (or equivalent) in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander archaeology and/or cultural heritage management.
  • Included on the public list of Victorian Heritage Advisors.

Experience

  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Ideally at least two years’ experience as a Heritage Advisor working on CHMPs

Knowledge and skills

  • Reasonable knowledge of Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and Aboriginal Heritage Regulations 2018.
  • Reasonable knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal cultures and matters including cultural safety and social issues.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft 365.

  • Genuine appreciation and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their culture.
  • Ability to support positive working relationships with Wurundjeri Elders and members.

  • Strong advocacy for the advancement and self-determination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and businesses.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and associated matters including cultural safety and social issues.

  • Self-managed, with the ability to take the initiative, work to tight deadlines and manage competing deadlines.
  • Creative problem solver, committed to continuous improvement.
