ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

Social Reinvestment WA (SRWA) is an Aboriginal led state-wide coalition of 25 non-profits, working for the last 5 years for smart justice, healthy families, and safe communities; and ultimately to end the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in WA’s justice system. Our work includes leading a campaign for the last four years to end imprisonment for unpaid fines; producing the podcast “Stories from the Inside”; Supporting communities developing place-based Justice Reinvestment sites including the Olabud Doogethu project in Halls Creek; Various advocacy and policy work on related issues including youth justice. Our new campaign focus is on Youth Justice Reform and Raising the Age of Criminal Responsibility from 10 to 14. The Raise the Age campaign is being delivered in partnership with Change the Record, a national organisation with a shared vision.  Change the Record is Australia’s only First Nations-led national coalition that aims to end the mass imprisonment of First Nations Peoples, and the disproportionate rate of family violence experienced by First Nations women and children. Change the Record is a foundational member of the national Raise the Age coalition.

COMMUNITY CAMPAIGNER

• Part-time role, 4 days a week (negotiable). 
• One year contract, with the possibility of an extension.

Answering to the SRWA Campaign Manager, our Raise the Age Community Campaigner will work with the Social Reinvestment WA team on ending the imprisonment of children under 14 in WA. You will mobilise and work with community groups around WA to help them run their own Raise the Age events and take action; Lead workshops on Raising the Age with a variety of groups; And develop a Lived Experience Ambassador program- supporting people with lived experience in the youth justice system to build skills to tell their stories and champion Raising the Age to the Western Australian public.

We’re looking for a community minded person with a variety of skills and experiences, passionate about the work we do, and ready to jump straight in and learn! 

Essential Criteria:

• Knowledge or Experience in a similar field (voluntary or paid)
• Ability to build relationships with a wide variety of people.
• Excellent verbal communication skills.
• Qualification in relevant field eg. Certificate, Diploma, Degree; OR demonstrated work experience equivalence. 
• Satisfactory written communication skills.
• Proficient in using technology: Microsoft Suite, Outlook, Social Media etc.
• Organised. 
• Able to take initiative. 
• HIGHLY DESIRABLE: Knowledge and/or experience in the area of justice.
• HIGHLY DESIRABLE: Community Engagement, Organising or Youth Development/Work experience.
