ALRM Core Objectives

The central object of the Movement is to assist Aboriginal persons (especially those Aboriginal persons who are detained in custody or imprisoned) to relieve their poverty, the consequences of their dispossession and social misfortune and to assist further in removing destitution and helplessness amongst Aboriginal people through the use of the legal system of the State of South Australia and the Commonwealth of Australia. Key Responsibilities

  • To provide quality, professional and culturally appropriate legal advice, representation, information and education in relation to civil, child protection and family law matters. 
  • To manage and maintain a caseload of files with supervision.
  • To prepare legal documents, chronologies and summaries as directed by Senior Solicitors. 
  • To provide a duty solicitor service to unrepresented parties in Care and Protection matters in the Adelaide Youth Court.
  • To assist with Legal Aid Applications.
  • To provide referrals to private solicitors and other services. 
  • To prepare letters in relation to outcome of hearings.
  • To complete internal referral forms.
  • To analyse and summarise records from various Government Departments including but not limited to the following (a) Department for Child Protection, (b) Department of Human Services and (c) Health SA, (d) SA POLICE. 
  • To undertake Legal Research when directed by Senior Solicitors.
  • To work as part of a team including other legal staff, field officers and support staff.
  • To understand and apply ALRM and Attorney General’s Department Policies as they relate to the provision of legal aid services to clients.
  • As part of a team provide outreach services in accordance with ALRM objectives. 
  • Liaise with other legal service providers, Federal and State Authorities and other agencies as required.
  • Perform such other duties commensurate with the functions of ALRM and this classification, as may be required.
  • Encourage and sustain a cooperative, “can do” work environment.
  • Contribute positively to organisational management and support operations towards the achievement of organisational goals.
  • Support and work with people with diverse backgrounds, value systems, cultural differences and special needs.
  • Other duties as required and/or requested by the CEO or respective manager.
  • Actively participate and contribute to responsible and safe work practices by ensuring all WHS legislation, policies and procedures are adhered to within the workplace this includes any directive given by the Human Services department in relations to any pandemics.
  • Embracing diversity and cultural differences in the workplace by modelling respectful behaviour in the workplace. 

Essential Criteria

  • Admitted as a Solicitor and Barrister of the Supreme Court of South Australia and as a practitioner of the High Court of Australia.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the issues confronting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in relation to the delivery of legal services and in the wider community.
  • Capacity to work effectively in an Aboriginal organisation demonstrating respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Cultures.
  • Commitment to delivering culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

Experience

  • Ability to deliver quality, concise advice/information by accessing legal problems logically, thoroughly and reliably with due skill and diligence. 
  • Experience in communicating effectively with a wide range of people from cultural, ethnic and indigenous backgrounds and or persons with a disability or mental illness.                                                                                       
  • Ability to relate well to members of the judiciary, support staff, government and non government agencies, other professional organisations fellow legal practitioners and members of the public. 
  • Ability to provide a legal service in an operational and investigative environment.
  • Possess strong work ethic and an eye for detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide organisational and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to efficient and effective service delivery and a commitment to a client-centred focus.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Thorough research and analytical skills.
  • Research quickly and accurately such matters as need research.
  • Respect the rights and preserve the confidence and dignity of all clients.
  • Work effectively under pressure.
  • Effectively manage time, resources and systems.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
  • Ability in the practical use of the office equipment’s and office systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and consult stakeholders proactively.

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of the Child Protection and Family Law jurisdictions. 
  • Knowledge of Equal Opportunity, Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare standards.
  • An understanding of the objectives of Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement, its services and clients.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Organisation’s Core Values (Code of Ethics) and the Employee Conduct Policy.
  • Maintain composure under pressure, handle repetitive and sometimes high volume work.
