The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) is a member-based organisation whose principal role is the training, assessment and professional development of emergency doctors for Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Position

ACEM is looking for a passionate public policy team member who is keen to build their leadership credentials. This role provides opportunities to build relationships across a range of health sectors and with government with a focus on building ACEM’s policy credentials in Aotearoa New Zealand.

As a senior member of the Policy team, your work in advocacy and policy development will make a real difference to health system reform, with a core purpose of addressing systematic challenges within Emergency Medicine and influencing healthcare outcomes for vulnerable and diverse populations within Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Working closely with passionate Doctors and the Policy team, your contribution will ensure that our Fellows and Trainees have the resources to practice safe and high-quality care whilst improving patient outcomes. Key strategic priorities for the team include addressing bottlenecks that prevent patients from being admitted to hospital (access block), mental health presentations at EDs, workforce distribution and building and maintaining safe working environments within the ED. Other key focuses of the role include implementing and coordinating advocacy campaigns or policy relating to public health and disaster medicine, and Indigenous health.

This a full-time, permanent position based in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. We are also accepting part-time applications at 0.8FTE for the right candidate.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in public health, public policy, or other related health disciplines
  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills to identify problems and solutions in a range of policy and advocacy environments
  • Knowledge of policy, legislative or political processes as they relate to the health sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Well-developed engagement and consultation skills including the ability to identify and liaise with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
