With Greens holding a third of Cabinet positions, the ACT Government is the Greenest in Australia’s history.

This position, based in the office of ACT Greens Leader Shane Rattenbury, supports advisers with day-to-day media and communications activities, but also takes a longer-term view, working with MLAs to ensure strategic communications priorities are clearly identified, appropriately resourced and delivered.

  • Identify long-term communications priorities for this term of government
  • Target resources, including staff time and communications budgets, toward achieving the identified priorities
  • Guide the development and implementation of strategic communications and engagement plans
  • Guide collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
  • Manage emerging issues as required
  • Administer MLA communications budgets to meet reporting requirements
  • Refine processes and ways of working to maximise efficiency, impact and staff wellbeing
  • Ensure commitments in the Parliamentary and Governing Agreement relating to public communications are consistently adhered to
  • Arrange learning and development opportunities for MLAs and staff

Selection criteria

  • Strong background in political or government communications
  • Relevant qualifications in communications, community engagement, media or content development, or at least seven years’ experience in these fields
  • Experience managing a team
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication and relationship management skills
  • Capacity to work independently, meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Experience or understanding of parliamentary systems, legislation and/or the ACT political landscape

This role is for 18 months, commencing February 2022, at 22 hours per week. The role is a Senior Adviser Level 1 tier 1 position at $120,436 plus superannuation and allowances (on a pro-rata basis).

The successful candidate will be engaged under a Legislative Assembly Members’ Staff contract, and other terms and conditions of employment are governed by the ACT Legislative Assembly Members’ Staff Enterprise Agreement 2018 – 2021. This is not an ACT Public Service position.

Applications from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people are encouraged. The role is based in the ACT Legislative Assembly, however, given the need for a COVID-safe work environment, flexible arrangements will be supported where possible.
