Brisbane Community Leaders (voluntary)

ActionAid Australia

ABOUT ACTIONAID

ActionAid Australia is a global women’s right organisation, working to advance the rights of women living in poverty in communities in 45 countries around the world. We work on issues such as climate justice, economic justice and women’s rights in emergencies.

ABOUT THIS POSITION

Are you passionate about women’s rights and social justice? Do you want to engage and inspire your local community to take action against for global gender equality? Are you keen to learn how to campaign and organise to create change?

If yes, then this role is for you! We are currently recruiting for Brisbane Community Leaders to lead our Brisbane Activist Group.

We’re building a connected, skilled, diverse and vibrant grassroots network that will stand in solidarity with the women we work with around the world. Together we can take action to address the root causes of poverty and injustice through our campaign to secure decent working conditions for women in the garment sector.

We want you to be a part of it!

We’re recruiting leaders from across Brisbane who are passionate about labour and women's rights to take action and stand in solidarity with women on the frontlines of global injustice.

Join us at our online training on Saturday 9th October 10am AEDT and learn all about ActionAid’s #SheWearstheCost campaign and how you can take action with a group of like-minded people to call on big fashion brands like Nike and the Just Group (owner of Just Jeans, Jay Jays, and Dotti) to step up their support to garment workers bearing the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are coming to a critical moment in this campaign. Companies are holding important annual meetings, where they’ll want to impress their investors. With the spotlight on these companies, now’s the time to make our voices heard and push these companies to commit to labor rights within their supply chain.

Our training workshop is an opportunity for you to:

  • Connect with other likeminded activists within ActionAid Brisbane’s Activist Network
  • Learn about ActionAid Australia and our current campaign: #SheWearsTheCost
  • Gain valuable skills in movement building and the power of community organising
  • Brainstorm ideas to engage and inspire your local community to pressure big brands

Our campaign is powered by people like you. Your voice and contribution are powerful as we call upon Nike and Just Group to #RespectLabourRights and to #PayYourWorkers.

As a Community Leader you will lead and establish a community of volunteers that will campaign locally on international women’s rights issues. You’ll be trained in campaigning, community organising and ActionAid’s Human Rights Based Approach.
