Our organisation

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is the peak union body representing almost 2 million workers and their families.

Since our creation in 1927, the ACTU has spearheaded some of the most fundamental workplace struggles in Australia’s history.

The ACTU’s role as a peak body is to encourage workers to join their union, be a national voice for our movement, and advance and defend workers’ rights by co-ordinating union campaigns, representing workers at a range of government and non-government forums and to provide industrial, policy and other support to our affiliates.

The role

The Australian Trade Union Institute (ATUI) assists Australian unions to build their organisational strength and capabilities to protect the workplace rights and living standards of Australian workers.

This role will drive the ATUI’s communications within the Australian union movement and promote and support the work of the Institute by developing and implementing a strategic and holistic approach to communications, engagement and marketing.

This role is responsible for crafting and implementing effective communications and marketing campaigns to promote educational courses and events delivered by the Australian Trade Union Institute.

These campaigns will predominately be digital-driven, utilising mass-emailing marketing targeted at affiliates and union members, but will also involve content writing, editing, monitoring email and web performance and traffic, social media, data management and segmentation, basic design, printed materials and SMS broadcasts.

This role will also be responsible for certain digital campaigns led by the Digital Communications team in the Campaign work group.

This role involves fostering collaboration and engagement with other team members and workgroups. From time to time this role may oversee external project providers, ensuring timely and budget-compliant delivery of various projects as part of the ATUI & Capacity Building work group and Campaigns work group.

This role contributes to new ideas and strategies to keep ACTU at the forefront of affiliate education and capacity building and digital campaigning and growth.

  • Trend Awareness: Stay updated on the latest trends, tools, insights, and techniques in email and content marketing, digital campaigning, and communications, incorporating best practices into ACTU’s strategies.
  • Effectiveness Analysis: Establish frameworks to analyse and report on the effectiveness of digital marketing activities, particularly content-related (including email), translating insights into actionable strategies that align with ACTU’s goals.
  • Database Maintenance: Collaborate with team members to coordinate and monitor the maintenance and integrity of ACTU’s databases, innovating new maintenance approaches.
  • Educator Support: Assist ATUI educators in promoting courses, events, and other activities.
