The Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) is looking for a Program Manager to manage the development and implementation of the National Plastic Recycling Scheme (NPRS). In 2020, the AFGC was awarded funding under the Federal Governments Product Stewardship Investment Fund to develop an industry led product stewardship scheme for plastic packaging. The NPRS will bring the food and grocery supply chain together to deliver a national scheme initially focusing on increasing the diversion of soft plastics from landfill and will move on to support the increased recycling of other plastics that are currently difficult to collect and/or recycle. The aim of the scheme is to assist brand owners achieve the national packaging targets by increasing the recycling rate of plastic packaging and increasing the availability of food grade plastic packaging containing recycled content.

The NPRS Program Manager will be responsible for managing the three project phases and associated working groups including; Business Case, Scheme Design and Implementation to deliver the project on time and on budget. The ideal candidate will be able to collaborate with AFGC members, consultants, government and recycling and plastic supply stakeholders and possess an understanding of material and monetary flows through the plastics and recycling supply chain.

Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate the following experience and attributes:

  • A ‘can-do/action orientated’ attitude
  • Self-motivation and a demonstrated capability for independent work
  • Senior program/project management experience with the ability to motivate and hold others accountable to project timelines
  • Experience in the food or grocery and/or waste and recycling industries
  • Understanding of local and/or global product stewardship/extended producer responsibility programs
  • Understanding of material and monetary flows through the packaging, waste and recycling and plastics supply chain
  • Experience building relationships with a broad range of stakeholders and managing complexity
  • Well-developed planning, written and communications skills
  • Willingness to undertake interstate travel as required

The role will report to and work closely with the AFGC Director of Sustainability and preferably be based in Canberra. Dependent upon applicant experience and skillset, the role will be 4-5 days per weeks for the period of May 2021 to March 2023.
