Aboriginal Family Legal Services

Aboriginal Family Law Services (WA) aims to provide free, culturally secure, and legal and support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims and survivors of family violence and/or sexual assault.

The Principal Legal Officer is responsible for the delivery of legal services for AFLS (Aboriginal Family Legal Service). AFLS provides legal services in the following areas: Family Law, Children’s’ Court, Magistrates Court, particularly in matters concerning family violence and Criminal Injuries Compensation.

We are seeking two part-time PLOs to manage legal services in the six Regions we operate. PLOs will each be responsible for the management of legal services in three AFLS regional offices. These positions are based in our Corporate Office, and they will work closely with each other and with the CEO (Chief Executive Officer).

The successful applicants will have an understanding and able to:

  • Be responsible for the provision of AFLS legal services, to the Legal Practice Board of WA.
  • Ensure compliance and understanding of PII Risk Management, CLASS and Community Legal Centres Accreditation.
  • Be required to remotely supervise restricted practitioners in regional office locations, which will require extensive travel.
  • Provide leadership to legal staff and other AFLS staff.
  • Commit to the principles of Aboriginal self-determination, social justice, and Closing the Gap.
  • Understand the complexity of Family violence that affect Aboriginal people.
  • Confidence in establishing networks and advocating on behalf of AFLS.
  • Have an understanding and knowledge of Child Protection Process and Practices
  • Undertake a key role within the executive of AFLS and report to the Board.

Essential Eligibility Requirements

  • Graduate Diploma in Legal Management Practice
  • Current ‘C’ Class WA Driver’s License
  • Current National Police Clearance Certificate
  • Current Working with Children Check

Essential

  • Admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Western Australia.
  • Minimum of 7 years post admission legal practice experience.
  • Relevant knowledge of the law, practice, and procedures within the areas the Aboriginal Family Legal services operates.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles risk issues associated with family, domestic and lateral violence.
  • Knowledge, understanding of and/or experience working within remote Aboriginal communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people.
  • Demonstrated experience in Case Management, including prioritising tasks to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated experience in practice management of staff.
  • The ability to competently receive information and collate into written reports.

Desirable

  • Post graduate education in Family Violence, particularly within Aboriginal communities.
  • Good operational knowledge and experience running remote operations / organisations.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the community legal sector.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience supervising junior lawyers
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working within family violence law.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in Child Protection.
