ABOUT SENATOR JANET RICE

Janet has been a passionate environmentalist and activist for more than thirty years. A climate scientist by training, Janet began her working life campaigning to protect forests. She was part of the 1983 Franklin River Blockade, and a leader of the campaign that resulted in the creation of the Errinundra National Park in East Gippsland. She became a senator in 2014, played an important role in achieving marriage equality, and is the only out bisexual MP in Australia.

Janet and her parliamentary colleagues are committed to being a strong voice for a caring society, a fair economy and a clean environment. Janet's work focuses on her portfolios of: Families, Ageing and Community Affairs, LGBTIQA+, Foreign Affairs, Multiculturalism and Forests.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Senator Rice is seeking a passionate, engaged person with a strong commitment to social justice and community advocacy to connect people and community groups with her work in the parliament and the community.

In this role you will:

  • Manage relationships with stakeholders in the LGBTIQA+, Foreign Affairs and Multicultural portfolios.
  • Connect these stakeholders and their issues, priorities and goals to Senator Rice’s work across policy, campaigns and media.
  • Assist Senator Rice to represent these communities in the parliament by:
    • Drafting speeches, and assisting with parliamentary tactics
    • Providing research support to the senator
    • Preparing questions for senate estimates
    • Coordinating the senator’s engagement with relevant senate committees
  • Provide comprehensive advocacy and support to Senator Rice’s constituents relating to immigration and income support.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential:

  • Experience successfully building and maintaining relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Understanding of the experiences of LGBTIQA+, migrant, diaspora and multicultural communities in Australia
  • Demonstrated high level research and written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to understand and communicate complex and nuanced issues
  • Capacity to juggle competing priorities and work effectively and amicably under pressure
  • An understanding of and commitment to the Australian Greens’ principles and policies

Desired:

  • Experience working in a community support or constituent service environment, providing personalised assistance for complex social and administrative issues

PAY AND CONDITIONS

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984, and employment conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2020-23.

The position is offered at an Electorate Officer B classification with a salary of $73,377 per annum applied pro rata. In addition to the salary, employer-sponsored superannuation of 15% is offered.

Please note all employees are expected to sign a confidentiality and code of conduct agreement prior to the commencement of their employment. A probationary period of 3 months, with the option of extending by a maximum of two months, will apply.
