National Lead, Urban Water - Flexible Location

Alluvium Consulting
  • The role will be based in our Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle or Canberra offices.

Alluvium was formed in 2006 with a focus on river health management and over time has grown to be one of Australia’s largest and most trusted brands delivering holistic catchment to coast science, engineering and economics. We now employ over 100 staff and have an increasing presence internationally.

Our work in urban areas now comprises around 40% of the group time and efforts. This includes planning and engineering of water quality treatment, economic and investment strategies to improve water management and scientific advice on ecological or human health management. Our aim is to truly understand the best science and being able to apply that to on-ground challenges.

We like to use the lessons over decades of work in natural resources management in the urban zone and are excited by the opportunities that exist.

If you are the right person for this role you will likely know many of the people who work within our group. We want someone to co-ordinate and build between the different disciplines and geographies in which we work.

The Alluvium Group

The Alluvium Group brings together four organisations who share a common purpose: to make a difference to the world we live in.

Our four businesses share a collective vision, strategy and a commitment to client service. Our business model is unique and driven by a genuine belief that a focus on technical depth and excellence better serves our clients.

We work together when it adds value, for instance jointly investing in the Group’s R&D program to give back to the industry and to ensure that the latest science has a path to implementation.

As a group we are focussed on an enabling culture in order to remove barriers to creativity and encourage people to develop as leaders throughout our industry.

The strength of our group is embedded in the independent business decision making of our company boards and leadership, and the ability of each entity to focus on delivering exceptional work for our clients.

Your fit

  • You will have an industry profile and presence. Ideally you are already driven to lead industry debate and are giving some of your time and energy to supporting better outcomes for the broader community
  • You need to bring a long-term and national perspective in the work you do. Our work does make a positive difference, but it can take time and our senior staff need to be able to see the bigger picture
  • You need to be good with people. We don’t have layers of management making decisions; our business works by engagement with staff to collectively solve problems and advance issues. Strong interpersonal skills are required and ability to effectively manage up and to other managers is important
  • You will understand and have insights into how consulting in an urban water space works. This will include a passion for ‘getting your hands dirty’ and building great relationships with clients
  • You will need strong financial skills and an understanding of the balance between maintaining client relationships and delivery

Role context

Work in urban environments is one of our key focus areas and involves businesses across the Alluvium Group. We undertake several hundred projects each year for clients who are passionate about improving the way our cities manage water and their environment. We have a number of staff who are recognised as leaders in the field.

Our goal is to be influential in issues of the environment and communities. This role has two main aims:

  • To coordinate our efforts at a national scale. We want to build on the skills and experience in the group to be a part of the debate in the industry. This role will have responsibility for coordinating a nation-wide community of practice and engaging the group with the wider industry
  • To help build our presence in the Sydney region and/or South East Queensland. You will complement the skills already in the business in those regions and nationally

Key Skills and experience required:

  • A profile in and extensive connections across the water industry
  • An understanding of the big challenges facing urban areas and a vision for how to address them
  • A landscape architecture, engineering, economics or science background with 15+ years experience in planning, policy or implementation of urban water cycle and integrated water management schemes
  • Excellent communication and project management skills. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to work across different disciplines and locations, be able to communicate across teams, and manage projects for quality and budget. Excellent writing skills are essential

Measures of success

Ultimately the measure of success is for the Alluvium Group to positively contribute to the conversation and influence the direction of our industry.

More immediate indications of success will be:

National Role

  • Lead a community of practice for urban water across the Alluvium Group
  • Be visible in leading the discussion and debate in industry to advance conversations on urban water policy, planning and design.
  • Lead the inputs into our R&D program from an urban water perspective
  • Identify, nurture and grow new markets and client opportunities
  • Together with others, drive technical excellence for the group

Regional Role

  • Lead the expansion of our service offering in the jurisdiction
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key clients and partners
  • Collaborate with and support the wider Alluvium team
  • Run projects on time, to budget and to a very high level of technical quality
  • Support, mentor and develop more junior staff

The role will be based in our Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle or Canberra offices.

Remuneration is commensurate with skills and experience and subject to negotiation.

An important part of our business is the ownership structure. We are not owned by a multinational – we are a staff owned business and proud that almost 50% of our staff have ownership. We seek to have all our senior staff to hold meaningful levels of equity in the business.

We understand that this is a role that requires discussion - for a confidential discussion contact Alluvium CEO Matt Francey [email protected], using the subject line: National Lead, Urban Water - Flexible Location enquiry via EthicalJobs, (0425 752 456).
