Board Director (Voluntary) - Women's Legal Centre ACT

Amanda O'Rourke Executive Search
  • INVITATION FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST - BOARD DIRECTOR
  • WOMEN’S LEGAL CENTRE ACT

Are you a proud feminist? Do you want to use your governance and leadership expertise to support delivery of services to vulnerable women in the ACT?

The Women’s Legal Centre helps women to stay safe, strong and in control of their lives by providing expert legal advice and representation. Courage, creativity and a belief in the possibility of change are at the core of its work.

The Centre provides legal assistance across the spectrum of need, including legal information and referral, legal advice and representation and litigation. Its main areas of practice are family law, domestic violence, early intervention care and protection work, victims of crime, migration, employment and discrimination.

The Centre provides legal services within a multi-disciplinary and trauma-informed practice model that incorporates a Social Work Team to provide wrap-around support to the most vulnerable and at‑risk clients. The multi-disciplinary practice is complemented by the Mulleun Mura Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Access to Justice Program.

The Centre is governed by a voluntary Board which meets 6 times a year. Meetings are usually in the evening and are a mix of face-to-face and online. Board terms are for three years.

Expressions of interest are invited to join the Board. While the role is voluntary, it offers the reward of contributing alongside other highly committed board members providing strategic leadership and governance advice to support the Centre’s continuing success.

The Centre is keen to hear from people who bring a diverse perspective and have made a contribution to:

  • organisational governance at a senior leadership or board level;
  • developing and measuring corporate culture; and/or
  • developing and measuring service quality and outcomes.

A commitment to the development of quality legal services for women in the ACT and time to contribute actively to the work of the Board are fundamental requirements, as is the willingness to develop and tap personal and professional networks to support the work of the Centre.

The Centre encourages applications from First Nations women; women with disability; and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to ensure effective oversight of the Centre.
