As the Great Barrier Reef Campaigner, you will be a catalyst for change – leading action to protect the Great Barrier Reef and its marine life from major threats like global warming. The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) has been defending Australia’s oceans and marine life for over 50 years. AMCS is one of Australia’s most influential environmental charities. We advocate for change to safeguard our oceans and the wellbeing of all life on our blue planet.

Purpose of the Position:

The Great Barrier Reef Campaigner drives our public campaign to build support and engagement that leads to the protection of the Great Barrier Reef, in particular from the impacts of climate change. Your main purpose will be to:

  • Drive the AMCS campaign to protect the Great Barrier Reef from the threat of climate change,
  • engage and activate AMCS supporters and the broader community to take action on the threat of climate change to the Great Barrier Reef,
  • build support and engagement amongst Reef stakeholders, including the tourism industry and local communities to protect the Great Barrier Reef, and;
  • plan and deliver action to support strong climate and renewables policies by governments and to oppose the development of new fossil fuel projects.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Identify and lead campaign opportunities to advance strong climate change policy at the State and National level and oppose new fossil fuel projects.
  • Collaborate with conservation groups, climate networks and other relevant stakeholders to build support for improved protection of the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Volunteer coordination and activities in support of our Reef campaign and work on climate change, including overseeing a Brisbane AMCS volunteer group to deliver a program of public activities and events.
  • Campaign planning and implementation.
  • Undertake policy advocacy with decision makers, government and stakeholders, engaging with government consultation processes and representing AMCS in relevant forums.
  • Advise and work with other AMCS campaigns and staff to drive the delivery of our Great Barrier Reef and climate campaigns.
  • Work with the AMCS Communications Team to support the delivery of a communications plan/strategy to build awareness of and engage the public on Great Barrier Reef and climate change issues.
  • Support AMCS communications work on the Reef and climate change by providing content for the AMCS website, social media, supporter emails and campaign materials.
  • Undertake media engagement, including acting as spokesperson on Great Barrier Reef and climate change issues where appropriate.
  • Assist the AMCS Fundraising Team to support the long-term sustainability of our work to protect the Great Barrier Reef, by supporting fundraising activities on Reef and climate issues.

Essential Selection Criteria

  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a similar role at a not-for-profit, campaigning or community-based organisation.
  • Experience in campaigning including strategy, planning and delivery to build a strong constituency of public support.
  • Experience working with and engaging stakeholder groups, the media and political representatives in a non-partisan way to achieve campaign aims.
  • Experience in community outreach, public engagement and event organising.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, including production of written and online campaign materials.
  • Ability to develop, plan and implement projects and collaborative initiatives.
  • Commitment to protecting the Great Barrier Reef and our oceans.

Desirable Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise volunteers.
  • Experience working on marine conservation and climate issues.
  • Tertiary qualification in science, public policy, communications or related fields.
