The Alannah & Madeline Foundation is a national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to keeping children and young people free from violence and trauma wherever they live, learn and play. Through Care, Prevention and Advocacy programs, we fight for their right to be safe, so their future is strong.

We also support Dolly’s Dream to help change the culture of bullying by addressing the impact of bullying, anxiety, depression and youth suicide, through education and direct support to young people and families.

The role:

This role is based at the Foundation’s head office in South Melbourne but will primarily deliver service in Greater Metropolitan Melbourne with likely focus on Melbourne’s North & West with the capacity to deliver to some services across other regions.

Reporting into the Program Manager, TraCS, Child and Family Consultants are required to work in services when children are present to provide hands on, in-the-moment coaching and support to educators to build their capacity to provide trauma sensitive and attuned environments and relationships with their children and families.

Consultants will be required to occasionally work after hours to provide reflective support, training and guidance to further promote the educator and service capacity and to provide safe and confidential spaces for educators to discuss their work with children and families experiencing vulnerability.

How and where you work is discussed with each staff member based on individual circumstances, role requirements and accountability for delivery of high-quality work. We support our staff to work flexibly, both in location and hours, based on the premise that work will remain the focus of any arrangement.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide reflective practice and coaching for early childhood staff
  • Support teachers and early childhood educators to provide safe and supportive learning environments for children
  • Support strategies within the kindergarten which create connection and defuse conflict
  • Develop plans which support children in the development of pro-social skills
  • Support kindergartens to work through non-attendance barriers of enrolled children and support transition to school where required

Experience required:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in providing high quality, complex case management to children, youth and families in the context of violence or abuse and trauma (essential)
  • An appropriate tertiary qualification in social welfare such as Social Work or Psychology, with eligibility for membership of professional organisation (i.e. AASW or APS) or other qualifications suitable for practice in the child and family welfare field (essential)
  • Demonstrated, expert knowledge of the best practice models and theories relating to children, families, trauma and violence or abuse.
  • High level professional understanding of trauma informed practice principals and frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience in translating trauma informed practice, relevant and emerging knowledge and theory into practice with key stakeholders.
