Overview

The Australasian Meat Industry Employees Union is a registered trade union representing workers in abattoirs, red and white meat processing, smallgoods, supermarket, and general butchering around Australia.

We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic, and self-motivated person to join our team as our National Industrial Officer, based in any State of Australia.

The position is suited to a person with significant practical litigation experience in employment and industrial relations. We are looking for a resilient team player with a positive and enthusiastic outlook, a demonstrated commitment to union values, excellent all-round communication skills, and the ability to maintain and build constructive working relationships. The role is busy and challenging so organisation, time management, and problem-solving abilities are critical.

Key responsibilities

  • Providing legal advice to the Federal Secretary, Branch Secretaries and organisers of the Union
  • Assisting the Federal Secretary in the internal governance of the Union
  • Advising and representing the Union and its members in various industrial courts and tribunals such as the Fair Work Commission and Federal Circuit and Family Court, including in relation to:
    • Award maintenance and variations
    • Rule changes
    • Industrial disputes
    • Unfair dismissals and general protections
    • Enforcement of industrial entitlements
    • Enterprise bargaining
  • Monitoring the Union’s regulatory compliance with the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009
  • Liaising with and attending various industry meetings and committees
  • Preparing written submissions to government bodies
  • Monitoring legal developments of significance to the Union and its members

Key selection criteria

  • Legally qualified and admitted to practice
  • Eligible to hold an unrestricted legal practicing certificate
  • Demonstrated litigation experience in industrial courts and tribunals
  • Ability to develop, coordinate and implement industrial strategies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to the vision, values, and objectives of the Union and social and economic justice
  • Advanced legal research skills
  • Technologically literate

Hours

Full-time hours working 9:00am to 5:00pm (some flexibility on start and finish times).

Rostered day off once every 4 weeks.

Location

The successful applicant will be based in any State of Australia but the position is office based and attendance to the respective office daily is expected. The role will require occasional interstate travel.

Wages

An attractive salary package is available, from $100,000 per annum plus 12.5% superannuation, but negotiable, commensurate with skills and experience.
