The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) is a union of workers from diverse industries and occupations – campaigning for economic, industrial and social justice. 

The AMWU prides itself on bold, member-led campaigns, like ‘Streets-Free Summer’ and ‘Boycott CUB’. 

We are looking for an experienced and passionate individual to coordinate the work of our communications team. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

On any given day, your work may include – but not be limited to – the following: 

  • Managing a small team of communications experts to deliver prompt and relevant communications outputs 
  • Overseeing the written, digital and media strategy for the National Union 
  • Supporting our industrial and political campaigns with effective and engaging communications 
  • Overseeing a comprehensive print schedule for member communications 
  • Working with internal stakeholders to grow the communications capacity of the AMWU 
  • Supporting officials and organisers in developing and distributing effective communications strategies 

REQUIRED SKILLS: 

  • A commitment to the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union and the trade union movement; 
  • Strong and demonstrated writing experience across different media, including email, social, flyers, long form articles and media releases, with an understanding of how copy needs to be tailored to medium and audience; 
  • An understanding of the traditional and digital media environment; 
  • Demonstrated understanding of graphic design 
  • Capacity to embrace new technologies and strategies to deliver outcomes for AMWU members; 
  • Ability to multitask and prioritise workflow in a busy environment; 
  • Ability to work with a range of people, including elected officials, organisers, members, and delegates; 
  • Understanding of the AMWU’s membership and the union’s target audiences – including online audiences; 
  • Experience in leading a team of professionals 

DESIRABLE QUALITIES: 

  • Experience working on issues campaigns, and an understanding of how to use strategic communications to further campaign goals; 
  • A sound understanding of Australia’s industrial and political environment; 
  • Experience working in the media, communications and/or campaigns field, preferably in a trade union, political or not-for-profit organisation; 
  • Experience in managing social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), and using them for campaign, and/or supporter growth and retention purposes; 
  • Understanding of digital marketing concepts, including automated member journeys; 
  • Experience using the Adobe suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) to create print and digital content; 
  • Experience with CRM software to create member communications and track member engagement; 
  • Familiarity with digital advertising platforms including Google Ads and Facebook Ads Manager; 
  • Understanding of analytics and evaluation to facilitate ongoing improvement of communications

SALARY AND CONDITIONS: 

  • As per Officials and Officers Wages and Conditions of Employment 
  • Level 6 - $107,317.60 per annum 
  • One RDO per month
