The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union is one of Australia’s largest trade unions, and covers workers in many areas of manufacturing, mining, construction and shutdowns including metal and engineering, scientific and technical, printing and vehicle.

The AMWU has a position available for an experienced Organiser based in our Brisbane Office. The position will involve some regional and interstate travel. The position involves working with members, potential members, union delegates and other Officials and Officers of the AMWU and other Unions and employers.

Previous experience in a role similar to this is desirable.

Salary Package commences at $97 312. Union vehicle and other benefits available.

Duties Include:

  • Carry out the directions of the State Secretary
  • Work in an industrial context to protect and improve the wages and working conditions of AMWU members
  • Provide advice to members, Delegates and HSR’s on their rights and entitlements at work
  • Persuade potential members to join the Union and inform them of the benefits
  • Design and Implement organising campaigns to grow the AMWU
  • Coordinate regular workplace visits and contact with members in your area of responsibility
  • Assist in the Election and Training of New Delegates & HSRs
  • Build union structures in workplaces and provide assistance to members, Delegates & HSR’s where required
  • Represent local membership issues with management and negotiate disputed issues with employers
  • Regularly communicate with Members, Delegates and Health & Safety Reps in your area of responsibility
  • Participate in collective bargaining under the guidance of an Industrial Bargaining Advocate
  • Organise daily work routines in order to meet priority tasks and meet deadlines
  • Work collaboratively with Industrial Bargaining Advocates
  • Follow policies and procedures of the AMWU
  • Adhere to requirements of the Fair Work Act, WHS Act and other Acts and Instruments affecting your employment

  • Demonstrated commitment to trade union values and principles
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High standard of work ethic and self motivation
  • Ability to organise, recruit and plan campaigns
  • Willingness to work in a team based environment
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving ability
  • Ability to work semi autonomously to organising plans and activities and demonstrate drive, determination and adaptability
  • Extensive knowledge of appropriate legislation and industrial jurisdictions
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse and resolve industrial conflict
  • Must be able to demonstrate strong negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, develop and maintain working relationships to the benefit of our members
  • Computer literate
  • Current Driver’s Licence
  • Demonstrated ability to compile and write reports and draft correspondence and clauses
