About the role

The ALC has a great opportunity for an experienced and passionate manager to lead our Preserving Culture Department.

The Preserving Culture Department works in partnership with Groote Eylandt Archipelago communities to conserve and protect Anindilyakwa Cultural Heritage and to build a living cultural economy through programs guided by the Anindilyakwa people, their law and governance.

Reporting directly to our CEO, as the Preserving Culture Manager you will be responsible for the successful planning and delivery of the Preserving Culture Department programs and activities, ensuring each takes an active role in the preservation and promotion of Anindilyakwa culture as driven by ALC’s strategic priorities and associated objectives.

The Preserving Culture Department consists of 7 programs, including Anthropology, Art Centres, Language Centres, Media program, Forestry, Milling & Men’s Shed program, Music program and Radio program, which span across Cultural Centres located in Umbakumba, Angurugu and Bickerton Island, and an Art Gallery based in Alyangula. The Preserving Culture Manager is the direct manager for 10 direct reports (2 Anthropologists, 6 Program Coordinators and 2 Administration Officers). Each of the Program Coordinators employ an additional mixture of specialist and Traditional Owner staff to effectively delivery of program objectives across each of the communities within the Archipelago.

Key Responsibilities

  • Actively promote the department programs to the Groote Eylandt Archipelago communities to support community-led initiatives that help revive, maintain and strengthen the Anindilyakwa culture, including regular community consultations.
  • Maintain department initiatives that are engaging, collaborative and that build community capacity.
  • Ensure that recordings and research of sacred sites, cultural stories and knowledge is appropriately maintained, stored, and used, upholding the ALC’s policies regarding Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, with appropriate repatriation plans developed for the return of Cultural objects.
  • Report to the ALC Executive Management team on program contributions against the ALC Strategic Plan and operational requirements.
  • Lead and manage the department productivity and performance, including Human Resources and financial requirements such as recruitment, performance management and employee development, and managing budget planning and approving department expenses.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  1. A minimum of 5 years of experience of management in the Cultural Heritage field and/or Community Development.
  2. A Tertiary qualification or relevant experience in a Community Development or related field.
  3. Demonstrated ability in community development, engaging with community members and stakeholders to collaborate ideas and concepts and the ability to then conceptualise those notions.
  4. Previous experience in the management of a team with direct reporting responsibilities to your position.
  5. Proven high level interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to liaise, negotiate and consult with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  6. Highly developed time management skills and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and to effectively manage multiple projects including the organisation and effective delivery of workshops.
  7. Field experience with Aboriginal people, an understanding of Aboriginal culture and history, and an awareness of current social issues and their impact on Aboriginal people in remote communities in the NT.
  8. Proven experience in mentoring Indigenous staff to foster capacity within the workplace.
  9. Possess a current NT driver’s License or ability to obtain.

Desirable

  1. High level experience in authoring reports
  2. Proven ability to mentor, practice mediation as required and bring people together.

The remuneration package for this position includes:

  • Relocation assistance to the Groote Eylandt Archipelago,
  • Furnished accommodation, including electricity,
  • 5 weeks annual leave per annum with 17.5% leave loading,
  • 18 days personal leave per annum,
  • Holiday Travel Allowance,
  • Allocated vehicle,
  • 10 business day shutdown over Christmas/New Year paid at standard rates (no need to use annual leave),
