Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) is seeking a Senior Research Officer (Research Program), with the skills required to take on a leadership role within the ANROWS Research Program, working towards an end to violence against women and their children.

ANROWS aspires to be an innovative research organisation with authoritative leadership and high impact to support the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010–2022 (the National Plan). Our mission is to deliver relevant and translatable research evidence which drives policy and practice, leading to a reduction in the levels of violence against women and their children.

ANROWS is funded primarily by the Commonwealth and state and territory governments of Australia to assist them in achieving the National Plan’s vision of women and their children living free from violence and in safe communities.

About the position

This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week), reporting to the Director, Research Program, and is located at the ANROWS national office in Sydney (Level 11, 31 Market Street, Sydney NSW 2000). The appointment is for a fixed term from commencement until 31 December 2022 with possible extension, subject to funding.

The Senior Research Officer will take a leadership role within the Knowledge Production team in the quality and timely delivery of a number of in-house research projects at ANROWS. A primary responsibility of the Senior Research Officer will be to work collaboratively with the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Death Review Network to produce a variety of research outputs under the partnership. The position will also work with the Director, Research Program on delivering other in-house research projects as directed, including the “What works” evidence synthesis project. The position will also support the implementation of the ANROWS Research Program and Research Management System more broadly, and provide expert advice for a range of internal and external ANROWS stakeholders concerning the Research Program.

Remuneration and leave entitlements

The salary range for this position is $115,699 to $117,520 per annum plus 10% employer contributions to the employee’s chosen superannuation fund. ANROWS staff are entitled to 4 weeks annual leave, in addition to personal and sick leave; flexible working arrangements and an option to salary sacrifice.

Key responsibilities

1. Lead and contribute to in-house research projects within the Research Program. This may include: undertaking research, including data collection, analysis and write-up of publications for ANROWS; conducting systematic reviews; reviewing and/or preparing external funding submissions; reviewing and/or preparing project briefs and other planning documents; and project management, including the supervision of Research/Project Officers, where applicable.
2. Support the implementation of the ANROWS Research Program. This may include: scoping research topics and projects; providing advice internally and to commissioned researchers on research methods, data analysis and other research project components; supporting peer assessment panels, advisory groups and other similar structures; and managing quality control activities.
3. Contribute to strategic and review activities across the Research Program and Research Management System. This may include: providing oversight and status reporting across the whole Research Program; evaluating and reviewing projects within the Research Program; managing systems and process evaluations and reviews; providing expertise and guidance on research ethics; and undertaking meta-analyses and syntheses of research findings across the Program.
4. Implement the ANROWS Research Management System. This may include the further development and management of policies, procedures, processes and systems for the assessment, commissioning and management of research grants.
5. Provide expertise, analysis and critical assessment of research on violence against women. This may include representing ANROWS externally in appropriate forums.
6. Support capacity building, networking and partnerships. This may include: establishing and maintaining relationships with researchers and service providers; facilitating relationships between researchers, practitioners and policy-makers; and promoting the National Research Agenda to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children and ANROWS’s Research Program.
7. Work collaboratively with members of the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Death Review Network, other external stakeholders and ANROWS team members.
8. Provide assistance to the CEO and Director, Research Program and other directors as required.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated experience conducting high-quality research, with expertise across a range of social science methodologies such as quantitative, qualitative, applied research and systematic reviews and evidence syntheses.
2. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the capacity to build and maintain positive professional relationships and communicate effectively with a range of non-government and government stakeholders.
3. A track record of peer-reviewed published research, and/or report writing for relevant stakeholders such as policymakers.
4. Well-developed organisational and administrative skills, including experience with managing research projects and the ability to effectively determine priorities and achieve defined outcomes within strict deadlines.
5. A postgraduate qualification or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
6. Knowledge of the broad range of issues relating to domestic and family violence.
7. Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people who identify as LGBTIQ, and people with disability, as well as competence in working effectively with people in these groups.

Desirable

1. Experience or understanding of crime and justice issues as related to violence against women and children.
2. Willingness to travel interstate.
