The Impact21 Foundation program is tailored for school leavers with Down syndrome ages 16-22. This program will explore vocational orientation and develop independence through classroom activities, work experience, and civic engagement activities.

The opportunity

Reporting directly to the Senior Learning Facilitator, the Learning Facilitator will share primary responsibility for developing self-esteem, independence and learning skills in Foundation participants through classwork and experiential activities.

This will specifically involve supporting students in the development of their independence, vocational and self-awareness through classroom activities and through engagement with events, programs, and opportunities to develop civic and social engagement skills.

The role will contribute to program efficacy by supporting Impact21 22–35-year-olds in occasional job taster and work preparation and reporting insights for continuous improvement of both the Foundation and Impact21 programs. This role also requires the ability to meet organisational and other key stakeholder requirements in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working collaboratively to deliver a curriculum consistent with a school leaver learning/work readiness environment and practice
  • Contributing to student discovery
  • Facilitating the development and maintenance of personal development plans for participants
  • Upskilling participants in work related literacy, numeracy, and technology
  • Accompanying participants on work experience and civic engagement activities
  • Accompanying Impact21 participants on workplace orientation and job taster activities
  • Modelling professional workplace behaviours and language, problem-solving scenarios, and strategies
  • Preparing participant development reports, including assessments and recommendations
  • Providing guidance to Learning Support staff, subject matter experts and casual staff to support positive learning outcomes
  • Addressing behaviour issues relating to specific participants within a classroom setting
  • Engaging in critical reflection and inquiry to improve participants’ learning
  • Participating in activities such as parent meetings; Inclusion Foundation staff meetings; key-stakeholder meetings; and Impact21 team meetings
  • Maintaining a safe environment and adhere to OH&S policy and procedures
  • Working to strict policies and procedures as governed by the Impact21 Foundation program, NDIS, and national teaching standards in Australia
  • Undertaking other duties, which are appropriate to the level of the position, as directed by the Senior Learning Facilitator

What we are looking for

  • A demonstrated commitment to tailored education and an understanding of intellectual disability and the implications for teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of initiatives in student learning, the development of Individual Educational Plans and the ability to adapt curriculum to meet the needs of students with diverse abilities and the capacity to work with colleagues to continually improve teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and assess student learning data using a variety of assessment tools and to use this data to inform teaching for improved student learning.
  • Experience coaching young people in work experience, Duke of Edinburgh, volunteering or other extra-curricular civic engagement activities.
  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and high level of interpersonal skills including a capacity to develop constructive relationships with participants and their support networks, and other staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional learning to enable further development of skills, expertise, and teaching capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to support the social and personal development of students and an understanding of positive behaviour support.
  • VIT/teaching registration is not essential but desired
  • Current Australian Federal Police clearance, WWCC and NDIS compliance check.
