The role

The APTC Skills for Sub-National Growth Investment (SNGI) builds the capacity and quality of training of three regional Higher Education Institutions to increase graduates in industry-relevant trades and skills in priority economic sectors.

The Skills Adviser’s key responsibility is implementing initiatives that develop national TVET capability to deliver competency-based skills programs that meet the demands of labour markets and nationally accredited PNG qualifications.

Reporting to the Senior Skills Manager, the Skills Advisers will develop and implement activities that include coaching and mentoring of partner institution training staff and supporting improvements in curriculum, learning materials and resources.

The Skills Advisers will ensure training and delivery meet the requirements relevant to the National TVET Regulators for PNG qualifications and the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) for Australian qualifications.

APTC is implemented by TAFE Queensland (RTO 0275) on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). This position is classified under the Adviser Remuneration Framework as B2.

The Skills Advisers’ need to be self-directed and able to work in remote and complex locations with the position located at Mount Hagen Technical College or Highlands Agriculture College in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands Province or Bougainville Technical College in Tinputz, Bougainville.

As our ideal candidate, you must have

  1. Minimum 5 years combined training, assessment and industry experience directly relevant to the training and assessment being delivered.
  2. Experience of a wide range of flexible and effective learning methodologies and ability to implement these in a cultural and gender sensitive manner to adult learners and experience in vocational training, learning and assessment.
  3. Demonstrated skills in mentoring and/or coaching others, preferably in a culturally diverse context.
  4. Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, report writing and file management skills including the ability to relate effectively, collaboratively and ethically to staff, students and other stakeholders (including the ability to liaise with industry and partner institutions).
  5. Demonstrated strong computer skills in Microsoft Office applications including Word and PowerPoint and the ability to work both independently and as part of a small and dedicated team across multiple sites.
