ASMOF - The Doctors Union

The primary responsibilities of the Policy Officer include:

  1. Providing research, analysis and advice on issues important to the Union and its members and which support the strategic objectives of the Union.
  2. Proactively identifying and executing research projects that can meaningfully inform strategic decisions, including conducting original qualitative and quantitative research with members to empower their voices in the workplace.
  3. Monitoring and analysing State and Commonwealth legislation impacting ASMOF members and preparing policy submissions and position papers for government and non-government inquiries and consultations.
  4. Identifying issues relevant to running Union campaigns through strategic analysis of government agencies, policy documents, budgets, hospital funding streams, employment and patient data, and other relevant sources.
  5. Collecting and maintaining source data and materials needed to support research conclusions with precision and accuracy and creatively analysing financial and other quantitative data to identify facts and patterns relevant to achieving the Union's objective.
  6. Communicating data-driven insights and recommendations for diverse audiences, including staff, members, government, allies, and the media.
  7. Collaborating with staff to develop strategic plans around organising efforts and ensure campaigns are run well and informed by data.

To be successful in the role, you must have:

  1. A deep understanding of union principles and a commitment to trade union values and social justice.
  2. Strong quantitative and analytic research and data analysis skills and ability to apply research to develop union policy responses and strategic union campaigns.
  3. Demonstrated working knowledge of statistics and the capacity to comprehend complex issues and think strategically.
  4. A minimum of two years of experience successfully performing policy research and analysis in a union, social justice, or related field.
  5. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field that has taught you how to think critically and strategically.
  6. Demonstrated high-level people skills and the ability to work directly and collaborate with other staff, elected officials and member leaders
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including planning, researching, writing and editing quality research materials and preparing engaging and concise research, policy submissions, briefs and campaign materials.
  8. Good working knowledge of Office 365 applications and intermediate or advanced-level experience using Microsoft Excel (or similar spreadsheet software) and database software.
  9. Practical time and project management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks and projects, meet deadlines, and develop campaign and personal work plans and goals.
