About the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre

Founded in 2001, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is Australia’s largest human rights organisation providing support to people seeking asylum. We are an independent not-for-profit organisation whose programs support and empower people seeking asylum to maximise their own physical, mental and social well being. We champion the rights of people seeking asylum and mobilise a community of compassion to create lasting social and policy change.

We are a value-driven organisation that strives to be part of a change movement that supports people seeking asylum by providing critical services such as assistance with accommodation, food provisions, casework and legal services.

The ASRC movement is proudly supported by a community of committed volunteers and supporters who embrace the organisation’s vision that people seeking asylum can live safely, sustainably, independently and equally.

What You’ll Do

As our Volunteer Coordinator, you’ll play a pivotal role in managing the recruitment, orientation, and ongoing support of volunteers and student placements, ensuring they have an exceptional experience while making a tangible impact. You’ll collaborate with educational institutes and organisations like Volunteering Victoria to uphold best practices, ensuring high standards across our programs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and manage volunteer and student systems for the Humanitarian Services Program.
  • Lead recruitment and training efforts to ensure seamless coverage of shifts.
  • Oversee and track training requirements, from initial orientations to ongoing certifications in key areas such as MARAM, ASIST, and Mental Health First Aid.
  • Support staff in effectively supervising and collaborating with volunteers to foster a positive team environment.
  • Recognise and reward volunteer contributions through Program-specific activities and initiatives.

What We’re Looking For:

You are an experienced volunteer coordinator with a passion for humanitarian work, driven to create a welcoming, collaborative environment for all. You will possess:

  • Proven experience in volunteer management, including recruitment, training, and supervision.
  • Strong coordination skills, with a talent for building and maintaining systems and processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to engage diverse audiences and foster teamwork.
  • A consultative decision-maker who can lead with both empathy and decisiveness.

Lived experience of seeking asylum in Australia is highly desirable. Knowledge of policy and issues impacting on people seeking asylum in Australia as well as previous experience working within a not-for-profit environment, would also be advantageous.
