  • Full time position – 38 hours per week

The opportunity / About the role 

Working within the SA Red Cross’s Emergency Services team this regional position will work closely with community leaders to develop community-based initiatives and activities that strengthen communities’ ability to respond to an emergency when it happens. Based on the York Peninsula the position will work alongside Narangga community members and leaders as well as the SA Recovery and Preparedness Coordinator and team to develop and deliver activities and initiative that support emotional and mental wellbeing. This is a unique opportunity to increase the cultural understanding and learning of the broader community, Emergency Services sector, and the Australian Red Cross. 

You will use a strengths-based Community Development approach when working with Aboriginal and non- Aboriginal leaders and community members to connect, develop, coordinate, and deliver community initiatives which support mental and emotional recovery and people’s preparedness to multi hazards. Working outside of business hours and occasional travel across SA will enable you to respond to community needs and support the activities of the team. There are opportunities for inter- state travel also.

This role requires a creative, proactive and flexible person with a high level of interpersonal relationship development skills with experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Project management and/ or community development experience and strong time management and organisation skills are key for this role. The Recovery Project Officer position requires a high level of administrative and computer skills including Microsoft Office and Teams.

What you will bring 

  • As an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, demonstrate a level of knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, community and country
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including the requirement for genuine and transparent consultation and negotiation
  • Basic administrative, organisational and time management skills
  • Events management experience highly regarded
  • A Working with Children Check and Valid Driver’s License are mandatory requirements for this role
