Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is the largest private (non-profit) owner of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife at 31 sanctuaries in which we own or manage in partnership, covering a total of more than 6.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, the Top End and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. With a focus on practical land management, informed by world-class science, AWC is implementing a dynamic new model for conservation.

AWC is looking for a small team of dynamic people with experience in hospitality to facilitate the operation of the renowned Mornington Wilderness Camp (MWC). MWC is one of the Kimberley’s highest rated destinations, known worldwide for its scenery (sandstone escarpments, ancient gorges and vast savanna woodlands), its wildlife (Gouldian Finches are one of 200 bird species) and the integration with a working conservation project. Attracting 4,500 visitors each year, MWC offers safari tent accommodation, 25 site campground, a licensed bush restaurant and a range of tours/interpretative products.

Based at MWC, this is a stunning opportunity to be a part of the continued success of an iconic wilderness camp which contributes substantially to the success of Australia’s most effective conservation organisation. All proceeds from our Kimberley Wilderness Camps are invested in the conservation of AWC’s Kimberley properties. Your success in this role will mean more revenue to invest in the conservation of threatened species such as the Gouldian Finch and the Northern Quoll and greater public awareness about AWC and the plight of Australia’s wildlife.

We are looking for a skilled Head Groundskeeper and handy person to work within a small team of people to facilitate the operation of the renowned Mornington Wilderness Camp (MWC). This is a unique opportunity for a practical, hands-on, easy-going person with a broad range of skills to dedicate their time, passion and abilities and become an integral part of a team protecting the spectacular Kimberley landscape and its threatened wildlife. You will have the opportunity to explore this magnificent part of the Kimberley and every day you will awaken to an experience like no other.

responsibilities

Based at Mornington Wilderness Camp, and reporting to the Kimberley Wilderness Camps Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Maintenance of grounds and lawns (restaurant, safari tents, campgrounds, staff accommodation and surrounds; workshop etc) including mowing, watering, weeding and pruning.
  • Building maintenance including carpentry, plumbing (septic) & painting.
  • Minor mechanical repairs, including changing/repairing car tyres.
  • Maintaining supplies of essential services (waste, water & gas).
  • Logistical services (i.e. supply town runs to Derby, approx. 5 ½ hours away via Gibb River Road).

You will require:

  • Demonstrated practical skills in relation to asset and infrastructure repair & maintenance across a broad range of trades.
  • Ability to use a wide range of plant and equipment.
  • A strong work ethic and an ability to work closely with a multi-disciplinary team in a remote setting.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks in an efficient manner, use initiative, work unsupervised and take ownership of your role.
  • Manual driver’s licence, medium rigid truck licence, experience operating agricultural machinery (such as trucks and tractors) and 4WDs.
  • The ability to 'self-start' and work flexible hours as required.
