Australian Wildlife Conservancy is the largest private owner and manager of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife across more than 6.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, and the Top End. Recognising that ‘business as usual’ for conservation in Australia will mean additional extinctions, AWC is developing and implementing a new model for conservation.
AWC own three sanctuaries in the Kimberley region: Mornington, Marion Downs, and Charnley-River, as well as managing in partnership: the Dambimangari, Wilinggin, and Yulmbu Aboriginal Corporations, and the Commonwealth Department of Defence controlled Yampi Sound Training Area. In total, these sanctuaries and partnerships cover a combined area of over 4.3 million ha and protect numerous threatened habitats and species.
Reporting to the Regional Operations Manager – North-West, the Operations Manager – Mornington, Marion Downs & Tablelands (MMDT) is responsible for providing operational management to support effective conservation at MMDT in collaboration with the North-West Science team, as part of OneAWC and AWC’s national approach to conservation.
To be successful, you will need to manage and direct resources efficiently and in accordance with approved budgets and operating plans, informed by science-based strategies. The level of on-ground activity (feral animal control, weed control, fire management and infrastructure management is measured and reported on a regular basis.
Engagement with key stakeholders, Traditional Owners and AWC Supporters, including through sanctuary events, supporting the operation of the Mornington Wilderness Camp, and contributing to AWC’s communications program are also essential functions of this role. In this respect, you need to be a strong advocate for AWC’s conservation model and achievements and to have advanced communication and facilitation skills.
