Wilderness Camps Manager - Kimberley

Australian Wildlife Conservancy

~One of the most exciting conservation and visitor management roles in Australia~

This is one of the most exciting and rewarding conservation/visitor management roles in Australia – a rare opportunity to use your practical hospitality and visitor management skills as part of a team protecting the spectacular Kimberley landscape and its endangered wildlife.

Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is the largest private (non-profit) owner of land for conservation in Australia, protecting endangered wildlife at 31 sanctuaries in which we own or manage in partnership, covering a total of more than 6.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, the Top End and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre. With a focus on practical land management, informed by world-class science, AWC is implementing a dynamic new model for conservation.

We are looking for a dynamic individual with experience operating a successful visitor/hospitality operation to manage the renowned Mornington Wilderness Camp (MWC) on a 12-month fixed term contract. MWC is located on Bunuba and Kija Country approximately 350km from Derby off the Gibb River Road, and is one of the Kimberley’s highest rated destinations, known worldwide for its scenery (sandstone escarpments, ancient gorges and vast savanna woodlands), its wildlife (Gouldian Finches are one of the 200 bird species) and its integration with a working conservation project. Attracting 4,500 visitors each year, MWC offers safari tent accommodation, a campground and a licensed bush restaurant and a range of tours/interpretative products.

Charnley River- Artesian Range Wilderness Camp (CRAR) is located upon Ngarinyin (Wilinggin) Country, North of Mornington off the Gibb River Road. The 300,000 hectare sanctuary is a naturalists paradise providing refuge for over 200 species of birds and a diverse range of other wildlife. The visitor management program at Charnley is on a smaller scale in comparison to Mornington. Providing visitors with an authentic wilderness camp experience with an 80pax spacious campground and various gorges and rivers to explore.

Based at MWC, this is a stunning opportunity to oversee the continued success, and future development, of two iconic wilderness camps which contribute substantially to the success of Australia’s most effective conservation organisation. All proceeds from our Kimberley Wilderness Camps are invested in the conservation of AWC’s Kimberley properties. Your success in this senior role will mean more revenue to invest in the conservation of threatened species such as the Gouldian Finch and the Northern Quoll and greater public awareness about AWC and the plight of Australia’s wildlife.

In addition to experience operating a successful visitor/hospitality operation, including a restaurant and catered accommodation, you will:

  • have exceptional people skills including the capacity to manage a diverse team in a remote area working under pressure during peak periods;
  • demonstrate superior customer service, ensuring visitors have a great time and learn about AWC and our conservation work;
  • be meticulous and well organised, capable of juggling multiple priorities and meeting unanticipated challenges on a daily basis;
  • have strong financial, compliance and administrative skills including being eligible to act as the responsible person under our liquor licence;
  • be flexible, and have experience living in a remote area (or the capacity to do so); and
  • have a passion for conservation.

This is a rare opportunity to use your hospitality/visitor management skills and experience to help conserve Australia’s wildlife and the habitats in which they live, while building an exciting and innovative wilderness camp product. The successful applicant will be offered a competitive salary, based on skills and experience.
