About the role:

Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is a global leader in conservation, providing hope for Australia’s wildlife with a science-informed, land management partnership approach which delivers high impact results. We protect endangered wildlife across 12.5 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, the Top End and Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre.

In Central and South Australia, AWC manages five wildlife sanctuaries. Newhaven in the Northern Territory, and Kalamurina, Buckaringa, Dakalanta and Yookamurra in South Australia. Additionally, AWC has partnered with local landholders and conservation groups in a project to protect threatened species on Kangaroo Island, Western River Refuge (SA) and has recently entered into a new partnership with Traditional Owners of the Ngalurrtju Aboriginal Land Trust, Northern Territory (formerly Mt Wedge Station). Ngalurrtju is adjacent to AWC’s Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary, north-west of Alice Springs.

Covering almost 262,000 hectares, Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Australia’s largest non-government protected areas, offering beautiful scenery and a diverse mix of arid habitats. It is a renowned birdwatching destination, and is a hotspot for central Australian wildlife.

AWC is seeking a highly motivated ecologist to help implement conservation programs on Newhaven. The key responsibility of the position is to lead the team of ecologists based on-site to deliver AWC’s science program on Newhaven, including:

  • developing, implementing and reporting on AWC’s science programs at Newhaven, including:
  • managing a team of AWC ecologists, interns, and volunteers in the field
  • working with AWC land managers to deliver effective conservation
  • working with Traditional Owners and Ranger Groups as required to scope, plan and implement surveys
  • working effectively with key stakeholders in reintroductions and the broader scientific community e.g. Recovery Teams etc.
  • communicating AWC’s science program to our partners, Traditional Owners, the scientific community and to the public through publications, reports, presentations, participation in workshops, etc.
  • assisting with AWC’s communication and fundraising activities.

About you:

We are looking for an ecologist who is driven to make a significant contribution to the conservation of Australia’s wildlife. The successful candidate will require the following qualifications, experience and capacity:

  • a PhD in ecology and relevant experience
  • ideally, a track record in conservation ecology and, ideally, quantitative skills
  • leadership, team-building and communication skills
  • the capacity to work with a wide range of stakeholders including other scientists, land managers, Indigenous groups, neighbours, government agencies and volunteers
  • an ability to get jobs done on time and within budget, and
  • capacity to work in remote areas.

The position will be based at AWC’s Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary, approximately 5 hours north-west of Alice Springs, Northern Territory. The role requires frequent fieldwork on Newhaven and some travel to other AWC properties or reintroduction source sites, and a balance of office work.
