Position Description

The AWU National Office is seeking a full-time National Work Health and Safety (WHS) Director to be preferably based in our National Office, Granville NSW. 

Responsibilities

The role includes working with members and State Branches to:

  • Lead and coordinate national WHS campaigns
  • Resolve WHS disputes of national significance
  • Create model WHS policies for inclusion in AWU enterprise agreements and workplaces.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive WHS strategies for targeted industries
  • Lead research and policy development to identify and resolve WHS issues within AWU industries.
  • Produce detailed reporting on WHS matters to the AWU National Executive
  • Provide specialist advice on WHS legislation at state and federal level.
  • Draft submissions to relevant government and parliamentary committees
  • Assist AWU Branch Officials in conducting workplace health and safety inspections and safety risk assessments in member worksites.

Essential Criteria

  • Strong understanding of Industrial and WHS laws and regulations
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating industrial or WHS campaigns
  • Demonstrated experience liaising with key stakeholders on industrial or WHS issues and campaigns
  • Strong skills in advocacy and negotiation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to write reports and briefing papers at a very high standard
  • Previous experience in the union movement
  • Can travel interstate regularly 

Desirable criteria

  • Certificate IV in WHS
  • Familiarity with key industries in which the AWU has coverage
  • Demonstrated experience as an WHS officer, industrial officer or Lead Organiser within the union movement
  • Tertiary qualifications in WHS, industrial relations or law

Salary will be offered depending on experience and skills plus a generous superannuation package and conditions.
