At the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, we’re looking for an individual to join our voluntary Board of Directors. The AYCC is committed to maintaining a strong and diverse Board where individual members bring unique strengths to the organisation. We’re searching for individuals who:

  • Have a strong understanding of climate change, and a commitment to the role of young people in tackling it;
  • Have previous experience sitting on or reporting to a not-for-profit board and a strong knowledge of sound governance;
  • An interest in taking on extra responsibility within the board, for example as Deputy Chair;
  • Knowledge of the AYCC and our activities, and;
  • Are of any age (although half our board members must be under 30 when appointed, this is not a precondition for the role).
  • In particular, we are searching for a new director who is a practising lawyer, preferably with experience in employment law.

The role of the AYCC Board

AYCC Directors are responsible for:

  • Protecting the mission of the AYCC and support the organisation in building a movement of young people leading solutions to the climate crisis;
  • Ensuring long term strategy is in place, including developing, evaluating and refining the organisation’s strategic plan (current plan to run from 2021-2023),
  • Ensuring organisational oversight, including approval of major strategic and financial decisions,
  • Ensuring the organisation remains compliant to regulatory bodies,
  • Selecting, supporting and reviewing the performance of the National Directors,
  • Driving annual organisation review and risk review process,
  • Ensuring the organisation uses its finances in a sustainable way, and
  • Providing expert and strategic advice to National Directors as required.

Requirements of Board members

All AYCC Board members are required to:

  • Bring a strong commitment to the mission of AYCC the climate movement,
  • Be willing and able to oversee governance & strategy matters,
  • Be available for Board duties, including:
    • 5 x 1-day board meetings per year (face to face meetings take place in Melbourne, when permitted) for purposes such as: strategic planning, operational planning, board evaluation, or National Director transition;
    • 2 hours pre-reading for each board meeting;
    • Ability to serve on two committees as required (subcommittees include: finance, governance and risk, people and culture, fundraising); and
    • One major annual AYCC event each year (e.g. Power Shift conference)

We ask that all Board members commit to an availability of at least 2-3 hours per month for their Board duties. Board meetings are held quarterly (some via videoconference and some in-person) with sub-committees meeting semi-regularly. Board members are reimbursed for travel costs incurred.

  • Repower Port Augusta – supporting a community campaign to replace their ageing coal-fired power station with Australia’s first concentrated solar thermal plant with storage.
  • Youth Decide – the world’s first national youth vote on climate change
  • Switched on Schools – a national schools program of speakers, school conferences and mentoring

AYCC also runs numerous rapid-response and election focused campaigns targeting government and businesses. We are known for our creative tactics, grassroots strength and strong use of social media and video.AYCC is one of a handful of substantial non-profits in Australia driven by young people. All staff members and volunteers are under the age of thirty. The board also includes a majority of people who joined under the age of 30.The Australian Youth Climate Coalition Ltd is a non-profit company limited by guarantee. We are funded by contributions from private philanthropists, businesses, state and federal governments, grassroots fundraising and regular donations from supporters.
