ABOUT BALLARAT FROLIC FESTIVAL

Established in 2017, Ballarat Frolic Festival is a volunteer-run organisation that holds an annual arts and culture pride festival in the regional city of Ballarat celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and asexual (LGBTIQA+) artists, art, and culture.

Our values are social justice, respect, inclusion, and connection; and these are at the heart of how we operate as an organisation and within the community.

Our vision is an inclusive Ballarat where LGBTIQA+ people feel safe, connected and proud; and our contributions to art, culture and community are celebrated.

Our organisational goals are:

  • Connect our LGBTIQA+ communities by hosting an inclusive, welcoming festival that caters to our diverse communities
  • Raise the visibility of our LGBTIQA+ communities
  • Advance the acceptance of LGBTIQA+ communities within Ballarat
  • Demonstrate positive LGBTIQA+ leadership
  • Support the health and wellbeing of our LGBTIQA+ communities
  • Nurture the unique arts and culture of our LGBTIQA+ communities
  • Promote Ballarat as a place to visit and live for LGBTIQA+ people

ABOUT THE ROLE

Ballarat Frolic Festival is establishing a new Advisory Board as part of a restructure as we look to expand our festival into a twice yearly event.

Board members will provide advice on the implementation of Ballarat Frolic Festival’s organisational goals and support the Festival Directors with the delivery of the festival.

Experience with setting creative direction or event management is not a requirement as these functions are carried out by the Festival Directors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities of Board members include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide advice on the implementation of our organisational goals
  • Assist with ensuring the financial stability of our organisation
  • Assist with ensuring our organisation complies with its legal and regulatory requirements
  • Support the Festival Directors to deliver the festival

Board members are expected to contribute their skills to the Advisory Board and serve on at least one sub-committee to assist with the delivery of the festival. Sub-committees meet on an as-needs basis either in person or online in between Board meetings to complete required tasks.

These sub-committees include:

  • The Finance, Fundraising, Grants and Partnerships sub-committee
  • The Marketing, Media and Communications sub-committee
  • The Community Networking, Outreach and Volunteer sub-committee
  • The Documentation, Reports and Policy Development sub-committee

DESIRED SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES

Note: We know that it’s easy to talk yourself out of applying for a role if you don’t fit the majority of criteria - especially if you’re young, LGBTIQA+, a person with a disability, a woman, non-binary, and/or a person of colour. We strongly encourage you to apply if you are interested, as we are looking for diverse representation and experience, and don’t expect everyone will meet all criteria.

We are seeking positive, community-connected individuals based in Victoria who are over the age of 18, have diverse lived-experience and are passionate about being a part of a team.

Applicants with experience of living in Ballarat, or a regional or rural area will be looked upon favourably but this is not a strict requirement.

Must have skills:

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse group
  • Ability to advise on the implementation of our organisational goals
  • Ability to identify risks and issues, and work as part of a team to identify and enact practical solutions to address them

Highly sought after skills:

  • Financial qualifications and/or experience in accounting/financial management, reading financial statements, and setting up financial systems
  • Legal qualifications and/or experience in managing legal obligations
  • Experience with recruiting and/or managing volunteers
  • Experience with securing sponsorship, developing partnerships and/or writing and acquitting grants
  • Experience in marketing, communications, graphic design, and/or media relations
  • Experience in governance organisations
  • Proven leadership/management skills

WHAT YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD TO

  • Guiding Ballarat Frolic Festival as it becomes a well-known, signature festival in the Australian LGBTIQA+ events calendar
  • Working with and learning from like-minded professionals
  • Making a genuine difference for LGBTIQA+ communities in Ballarat
  • Gaining meaningful board experience
  • Tickets to Ballarat Frolic Festival events as a thank you for your contribution

TIME COMMITMENT

Our current team balances full-time jobs and family responsibilities, so we understand that volunteer roles complement other responsibilities.

The Advisory Board will meet face-to-face in Ballarat six times a year. Board meetings will occur during the day on the weekend - with dates set for the calendar year in advance. Meetings will go for approximately 2-4 hours. Catering will be provided, and assistance with travel or billeting may be provided if required.

Attendance at all Advisory Board meetings and roughly 4-8 hours a month to attend sub-committee meetings and/or carry out necessary tasks is required.
