Banyan Park

Banyan Park is Norfolk Island’s only early childhood education and care service. Originally established as a Preschool in the 1970s, Banyan Park was awarded a BBRF grant in 2017, and in 2020 we opened our brand new, architect designed, building which now caters for 55 children a day aged 0-5. We are well resourced and have a dynamic team of 15 passionate educators who are shaping a high quality learning environment in beautiful natural surrounds. We have a magnificent view of the ocean, bordered by lush green grass and majestic pine trees.

While Banyan Park has been working under the National Quality Framework since 2018, the service has not yet been taken on by a state regulator. Responsibility for education on Norfolk Island has recently transferred to Queensland, and Banyan Park is now on the doorstep of falling under the auspices of this state.

Norfolk Island

Although it is just a tiny rock in the Pacific Ocean, this sub tropical island has it all. With a rich history and a population of just 1800, Norfolk Islanders are community minded and proud of their incredible heritage and culture. Norfolk has an extremely pristine environment – beautiful beaches, majestic forests and national parks, with breathtaking views at every turn. There are several new restaurants, cafes and businesses which are breathing life into the town centre. At just 5km by 8km, there is no commute time on Norfolk, meaning additional time for social and leisure activities … and the real possibility of work/life balance!

The Role

We are looking for an experienced and energetic Director to take Banyan Park through its next chapter. Supported by an administrative assistant and a vested Management Committee, duties include:

  • overseeing all aspects of governance and management,
  • inspiring pedagogical practice through dynamic educational leadership,
  • ensuring adherence to all elements of the National Quality Framework,
  • ongoing leadership through change, and
  • continuing advocacy as we work to secure our state partner.

There is also a teaching component to this role, supporting the children and educators in the 3-5 year old age group.

We are looking for someone to commence in May 2022, to allow handover with the current Director.

Support will be offered with finding accommodation and a vehicle. Rentals on Norfolk Island usually come fully furnished, taking away the challenges of relocation.

Essential Criteria:

  • An ACECQA recognised teaching qualification
  • Willingness to take on the roles of Nominated Supervisor and Educational Leader
  • A current First Aid Certificate, including CPR, Asthma and Anaphylaxis training
  • Recognised Child Protection training

  • Demonstrated experience in leadership and management of an ECEC service
  • Sound understanding of and commitment to the National Quality Framework
  • Commitment to child led, play based pedagogy
  • Experience in delivering inclusive early childhood teaching programs

Desirable Criteria:

  • Demonstrated leadership through change management
  • Experience working within a rural/remote community
  • Experience with early childhood education in Queensland
