The Position

The Specialist Family Violence Practitioner works with families, individuals and children who are presently at risk of, or have been impacted by, family violence.

The Specialist Family Violence Practitioner is an integral member of the Family Safety and Healing Program and BDAC Family and Community Services Unit, providing advice and support to workers around risk assessments and safety planning, understanding the impacts of trauma on parenting and child development, and navigating the service system.

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide case management to families and/or individuals who are currently, or have previously, experienced family violence.
  • To provide risk assessment and safety planning to people who are currently experiencing family violence.
  • To connect and support engagement of Community members to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • To participate in client care team or professional’s meetings, advocating for the safety and wellbeing of Community members engaged with the Family Safety Program.
  • To provide expert secondary consultation and support to BDAC workers who have clients affected by family violence. This may include attending home visits to assist in the completion of risk assessments and safety plans.
  • To participate in BDAC Family Safety Program activities including, but not limited to; team meetings, planning days, possible involvement in therapeutic group work activities.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Experience in family violence risk assessment and safety planning for women and children.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Culture and the ACCHO environment.
  • A commitment to providing culturally safe service to Community members and continuing to develop your understanding of the experiences of Aboriginal people, specifically the direct relationship between colonisation and inter-generational trauma.
  • High level case management of families in crisis and who have experienced trauma.
  • A commitment to working within a team environment, participating in team meetings, supervision and planning as well as co-working with other BDAC workers to best support individuals and their families.
  • Remains motivated and productive, using initiative when working autonomously.
  • Strong computer skills, ability to use a range of software and IT based reporting systems.
  • Uses initiative, creativity, and has an ability to remain motivated when working autonomously.

Your skills and experience

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • A recognised social work degree or community services qualification, and/or extensive relevant work experience.
  • Professional comprehensive training in MARAM would be highly regarded.

Mandatory Requirements

  • You must also be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to work at BDAC.
