Country Director - World Animal Protection

Beaumont People

World Animal Protection has been a global voice for animal welfare for more than 50 years. Growing populations mean an increased demand for factory farms and animal feed production which in turn destroys wild habitat and exacerbates climate change. In response, World Animal Protection will give its undivided attention to two strategic and impactful goals for the next 10 years.

Goal 1: Ensure farmed animals live good lives by transforming the global food system.

Goal 2: Stop wild animals being cruelly exploited as commodities by changing the systems that allow it.

As Country Director of Australia/New Zealand based out of the St Leonards office in Sydney you will champion the 2021 – 2030 global strategy ensuring that the local plans and activities reflect global objectives while meeting global functional commitments that have been made. This is accomplished through effectively engaging and motivating the team of 25 passionate and highly skilled staff in pursuit of the vision, driving growth and organisational performance, whilst anticipating and managing risk. Reporting to the Global Director of Strategic Delivery, and working in a global, matrix environment you will be a proactive and effective member of the global Senior Leadership Team and lead on global pieces of work such as fundraising initiatives, programmatic delivery and Organisational Development project work.

In this highly visible role you will act as the spokesperson and head of World Animal Protection in Australia and New Zealand, and can engage with local and federal politicians as easily with a group of retail industry lobbyists, about the value, relevance and future of animal welfare, framed appropriately for each context.

You will embed and drive the culture, values and leadership style of the Australian and New Zealand teams, aligned to our global Values and Behaviours. This includes building a strong senior leadership team and empowering leaders to lead service offerings in an efficient and effective way.

As a global organisation, World Animal Protection takes flexibility seriously and when the office is fully open, is currently working to a 3:2 cadence where 3 days are in the office and 2 days are worked remotely. This role will also be involved in some out of hours calls to engage with our global counterparts and stakeholders.

To be successful in the role you will bring:

  • Substantial experience of working in an international environment and managing organisational change at a senior level (ideally including experience in New Zealand and/or INGOs)
  • Proven ability to lead, inspire, grow and manage teams to deliver results on time, within budget and to deadlines
  • Strong understanding at a strategic level of income generation (ideally fundraising) and growth and able to bring value in relation to major giving and partnerships
  • Experienced in and comfortable working with complex budgets and handling processes that deliver information and reports to a range of stakeholders
  • Strong strategic and analytical abilities with intellectual rigour and able to work well under pressure and make innovative recommendations that take account of long-term benefits and risks
  • Experience of senior level networking, developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders and in representing an organisation to external stakeholders at all levels incl. media
  • Give consent to be appointed to act as a company director for World Animal Protection Limited as directed
  • A strong commitment to the aims and values of World Animal Protection
