MATES was established in 2008, MATES are an evidenced-based organisation who provides suicide prevention through community development programs on-site, and by supporting workers in need through case management and a 24/7 helpline. MATES serves the construction industry in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia, the Energy industry in Queensland and New South Wales, and nationally to the Mining industry.

The program was developed from a solid evidence base provided by the Australian Institute of Suicide Research and Prevention: The AISRAP Report.

MATES vision is to be Australia’s leading industry suicide prevention organisation focusing on raising awareness, building capacity, and providing help and research.

The Role – Research and Manager

Reporting to the CEO, the Research Manger will enhance the value of the research for the ongoing development of MATES policy and practice. The role will involve project managing, MATES program evaluation, monitoring and driving the delivery of insights from MATES research, and translating them into practical solutions that support advocacy and maximise the impact of the MATES programs.

As Research Manager you will:

  • Actively drive research, translate research learnings into recommendations and practical solutions that inform policy and program development
  • Implementation of programs and training
  • Manage the development of study documentation including policies and protocols
  • Maintain the database of study participants and data
  • Contribute to journal articles for publication and/or other appropriate dissemination of research findings (including social media posts, conference presentations etc.)
  • Source research funding where required
  • Undertake impact assessments based on specific program/ project logic and context
  • Provide technical coaching, advice, and support to MATES’ project team and staff
  • Translate evaluation knowledge and theories into a workable plan for conducting evaluations
  • Coordinate and manage cost, time, quality, stakeholder, and client/sponsor management

Your Skills and Attributes

  • Ph.D. as a minimum (or close completion of Ph.D.) and relevant experience in research
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written communication skills, including experience in writing proposals and reports
  • Flexibility, occasional travel interstate
  • Understanding the complexity of research questions
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people
