Domestic Violence NSW (DVNSW) is the peak body for specialist Domestic and Family violence (DFV) services in NSW. They work to eliminate domestic and family violence through the leadership of the specialist DFV sector and the NSW policy environment. In 2021, DVNSW were awarded the contract to represent Women’s Domestic Violence and Court Advocacy Services (WDVCAS). The team at DVNSW collectively work towards a world where women, families and communities in NSW live free from violence, have equal rights, equal opportunities, and the freedom to reach their potential.

The role

The Senior Policy Officer is a newly created role, responsible for delivering policy analysis, research and strategic advice on issues specific to the role of the WDVCAS’s in the NSW DFV service system.

You will take the lead in engaging members and stakeholders to research views and priority areas of research, evaluation and policy with the goal of assisting the DFV sector in achieving best practice and delivering quality, especially across the justice system.

Responsibilities of the role are:

  • Undertake high-level research into DFV services, practice and outcomes, reporting on results and forming recommendations on best practice
  • Undertake research to identify opportunities for DVNSW to present submissions
  • Apply analytical and research skills to formulate policy positions within a broad and complex framework
  • Prepare high-quality written advice, briefings, submissions and other correspondence on policy, policy direction, service quality and outcomes measurement
  • Investigate policy or program options, and prepare reports and submissions on outcomes and initiatives in relation to ADVO and criminal justice response to DFV
  • Drive policy, practice and law reform in the area of ADVO and related DFV criminal charges, to achieve more positive court outcomes for women and their children.
  • Engage and support the WDVCAS’ across the state through consultation and regular engagement
  • Advocate on behalf of, the specific role of WDVCASs in the domestic and family violence service system in New South Wales
  • Support and input to DVNSW program reporting for government funding contracts

SELECTION CRITERIA

To be a successful applicant for this position you will meet the following selection criteria.

  • Current or previous employment experience in a WDVCAS; or a detailed understanding of WDVCAS policy and practice
  • Demonstrated experience in the domestic and family services sector and a strong working knowledge of legislation, legal processes and legal policy issues regarding domestic and family violence in NSW
  • You will need strong relationship building skills, ideally obtained through past experience managing relationships with government departments and key NGO stakeholders
  • You will need excellent writing, communication and analytical skills
  • You will preferably have a background in law, criminology and/or social work and social policy
