The Strategy, Policy and Reform Group leads the strategic, policy and reform directions of Beyond Blue. The Policy and Communications Team is responsible for driving Beyond Blue’s efforts to reform the mental health and suicide prevention systems in Australia, by shifting the narrative about anxiety, depression and suicidality, and influencing public policy.

The Policy and Advocacy Adviser is responsible for the day to day implementation of Beyond Blue’s policy reform agenda and advocacy activities, focused on suicide prevention.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Partner with the Early Intervention & Suicide Prevention Unit and The Way Back Support Service team to translate emerging insights from TWBSS evaluation, TWBSS evolution, the needs of the community, and Beyond Blue’s data, insights and experience, into compelling national and state-based policy propositions to ensure that TWBSS and other evidence-based models of aftercare are universally embedded in Australia’s reformed suicide prevention system
  • Develop compelling policy propositions to reform Australia’s suicide prevention system, in line with the Beyond 2020 strategy, focused on universal aftercare
  • Develop, implement and evaluate advocacy strategies, to enable Beyond Blue policy propositions to be adopted
  • Develop policy submissions, briefing documents, presentations and correspondence, to support policy and advocacy activities
  • Develop and manage strong stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally and proactively meet with key stakeholders, sharing insights and experiences
  • Proactively build awareness and understanding across Beyond Blue of State/Territory, national and international policy environments
  • Undertake research and analysis of policy issues relevant to Beyond Blue
  • Develop high quality briefings related to TWBSS, and suicide prevention more broadly, for the SPR and S&S Groups, the CEO and the Chair
  • Contribute to broader organisational activities and advocacy work associated with preventing suicide.

Qualifications and Education

Tertiary qualification in public health, public or social policy, political or social sciences (post-graduate qualifications highly desirable).

Essential:

  • Experience working in policy and advocacy in a government department, statutory authority, community service agency or peak body
  • Relevant experience in suicide prevention, mental health or other complex social policy area
  • A strong understanding of current Australian policy frameworks for mental health
  • High level strategic thinking, conceptual, analytic and planning health
  • Demonstrated high-level writing skills that can be applied to the development of a range of documents and publications for different audiences
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing advocacy strategies, background papers, briefings, position statements and policy submissions
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to communicate with internal and external stakeholders from all backgrounds
  • Excellent relationship management including experience in working with people from all levels of an organisation and capable of handling delicate situations and sensitive issues
  • Prepared, well organised and able to work to tight timelines and deadlines when required

Desirable:

  • Experience in evaluation
  • Experience in project management
