about the opportunity

The Big Issue is seeking a Books Editor to create content for our fortnightly magazine. This is a freelance WFH position, which can be based anywhere in Australia. It will commence in July.

Specific Tasks

  • Commission and edit one feature story per edition
  • Commission and edit three capsule reviews per edition
  • Write a 250-word books column per edition
  • Help source accompanying images
  • Plan for five editions in advance, where possible
  • Respond to pitch queries from writers and publicists
  • Manage a network of freelance contributors and develop new writers

The role is remunerated on a per edition basis ($300), for 24 editions per year.

the candidate

You are an established or emerging literary journalist and critic, with proven editing and commissioning experience. You are a passionate reader, and up to date on new releases and literary news. You have industry contacts and a portfolio of writing from which to provide examples of your work.

You will have excellent communication skills and attention to detail. You will be highly organised, flexible and committed to inclusive, high-quality arts journalism.

key selection criteria

  1. Experience in a similar role, specifically in an editing capacity
  2. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  3. Alignment with The Big Issue’s values and a commitment to contributing to an established, highly valued publication
  4. Existing body or work that demonstrates your suitability to the organisation and the role
