Blind Citizens Australia, (BCA) is the national representative organisation of people who are blind or vision impaired. Our mission is to inform, connect and empower Australians who are blind or vision impaired and the broader community.

We are a small but geographically diverse team working closely to achieve our mission. We thrive on communication, innovation, collaboration and making a difference in the lives of our members. About you

Your communication skills are second to none - whether it's a social media post, an email to BCA members, or an update to sector partners, your message is clear and concise. You are aware of accessibility and implement it in all of your work.

All of your work will positively promote people who are blind or vision impaired.

You are responsive, thrive in a busy team environment, and work collaboratively.

The stuff you need to know

In this 30 hour per week role, you will lead Blind Citizens Australia's communications.

This includes social media content, sharing, and moderation (via Facebook and Twitter), communications to BCA members, and regular updates to BCA partners.

These communications are a mix of written, produced in accessible formats such as braille and large print, audio podcasts, and video format.

This role also manages BCA's website, and project-based websites.

We will require you to occasionally work outside of business hours, so flexibility is important.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage social media direction and content
  • Draft and send weekly communications updating members on BCA and community events and projects, including Member Update and CEO update.
  • Manage and regularly update BCA's website
  • Oversee quarterly magazine, Blind Citizens News, working with the editor and others in the team to meet production and distribution deadlines
  • Oversee weekly radio program "New Horizons", ensuring content and production is of high quality, relevant and informative.
  • Manage BCA's media networks and responses

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Shortlisted candidates will need to be able to demonstrate these skills prior to interview.
  2. Knowledge of accessibility in communications, especially for people who are blind or vision impaired.
  3. Broad experience in drafting communications to a wide audience - ability to get a message across in a clear and concise way.
  4. Technical experience in updating and maintaining a Wordpress-based website.
  5. Capacity to prioritise a busy and changing workload.
  6. The ability to work collaboratively with staff in a remote environment
  7. Establish relationships, collaborate and engage with relevant teams and stakeholders

This position is a 12 month contract, with the possibility of extension.

The position has a national focus. The successful applicant can take advantage of flexible remote working arrangements, working from home.

30 hours per week (some weekend and evening work may be required).

Salary is under the SCHADS Award level 5 - 6, depending on experience.

It is a requirement that all BCA staff hold a current police check.
