About you

You are a true leader, seeing the strengths of each team member, in a small but diverse team. You are confident in leading a team remotely – the Policy and Advocacy Team are currently spread over 3 states in Australia.

You authentically represent people who are blind or vision impaired to promote accessibility, to bring issues of importance to the table and to create change. You take initiative in setting priority areas for the organisation’s policy and advocacy work. You connect and network with the sector and community to lead BCA’s strategic campaigns and projects that improve the quality of life of people who are blind or vision impaired.

The stuff you need to know

This is a full time role, leading the Policy and Advocacy Team.

This role works closely with the General Manager of Operations, to develop and implement strategic projects and campaigns which align with current policy and advocacy priorities, in consultation with BCA members and key stakeholders.

This role provides national representation for BCA on committees and forums. As well as providing guidance to policy and advocacy staff and committee members in relation to their representation responsibilities.

Duty Statement

  • Position Title: Policy and Advocacy Team Leader
  • Duration: 12 month contract with the possibility of extension (includes a 3 month probationary period. Fair Work Australia's )
  • The position has a national focus. The successful applicant can take advantage of flexible remote working arrangements, working from home.
  • Hours: 38 hours per week, (some weekend and evening work will be required.)
  • Salary: paid under the SCHADS Award – level 6. Superannuation contributions and salary packaging are available.
  • People with disability encouraged to apply.
  • Reporting Relationships: The position reports to the General Manager – Operations.
  • The Policy Officer, Advocacy Officer and Advocacy Projects Officer report to the position.
  • It is a requirement that all BCA staff hold a current police check.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Highly developed written and oral communication skills.
  2. Management experience, with demonstrated ability to provide day-to-day direction to a team that works in multiple locations.
  3. Demonstrated experience of individual and systemic advocacy.
  4. Strong knowledge of policy development and implementation.
  5. Ability to work closely with and relate to people who are blind or vision impaired.
  6. Ability to work with people in a small team across multiple locations with a unity of purpose and support for all team members.
