Position Summary

The Bower is a not-for-profit environmental Charity that assists communities by diverting waste from landfill through workshops in Parramatta and Redfern, second hand shops in Marrickville and Parramatta and repair or refurbishment of preloved electronic appliances and furniture.

The Bower has a vacancy for a motivated person with an interest in repair, refurbishment and upcycling and experience in managing workshops.

You will need a sound knowledge of carpentry/cabinet making, working with wood and furniture and a basic knowledge of general electrical repair. You will have knowledge of tools and techniques for repairs of these items and be able to demonstrate solid administration, management and customer service skills. This role will suit someone wanting to make a contribution towards a meaningful impact on the environment and those who are disadvantaged and vulnerable in society.

Position Description

The major objective of this role is to successfully manage the Bower Workshops and facilitation materials providing sound leadership of the volunteers and staff engaged in the teams. This role will also provide advice and assessment to the collections and sales teams on the most effective method to process incoming goods for repair, refurbishment, reuse and or upcycling. A key role in the Senior Management Team, the Workshop Manager contributes to the teams performance and the Bower's environmental and social welfare mission outcomes.

The Workshop Manager is responsible for ensuring the infrastructure including appropriate tools and resources are available, and maintained in their various locations. Repair jobs coming from the public require an ability to quote and therefore a knowledge of costs structures and materials is necessary.

The Workshop Manager ensures resources are available for the successful undertaking of general knowledge courses and repair cafe's inclusive of online packages.

You will be an organised individual with sound administration skills and experience of technology and software systems that manage data, deliver quotes and financial information, and support the delivery of on-line workshops.

QUALIFICATIONS and experience

  • Trade qualification minimum Cert 111 in Cabinet Making or Carpentry
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or similar, or willingness to undertake
  • Min 2 years experience in cabinet making or carpentry
  • Basic knowledge of materials and tools for repair of electrical goods
  • Ability to assess potential value of second hand goods and products.
  • Demonstrated knowledge about reusability of preloved goods, parts and materials
  • Demonstrated ability in managing staff and/or volunteers
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Safe Work practises and risk assessment
  • Experience in managing workshops and/or giving presentations
  • Current full NSW Drivers Licence

This position requires a WWCC - Working with Children Check, an NDIS Worker Check and a current NSW police check. The successful applicant will be reimbursed for the cost of their NSW Police Check.

What The Bower Provides:

  • Full time role (38 hours per week) which can include some work outside normal hours - 6 month probationary period.
  • Pay rates according to Retail award [MA000004] Level 6 – 8 depending on qualifications and experience.
  • 20% staff discount on purchases of stock (excluding consignment).
