About BTAC

Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corporation (BTAC) (also known as Thalanyji or Thalanyji Aboriginal Corporation) is the registered native title body corporate for the Thalanyji People. On 18 September 2008, native title was awarded over 11,120 square kilometres of land in the West Pilbara, including Onslow. BTAC is registered with the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) and has offices in Onslow and Perth.

Position Objective

This position supports the Native Title Coordinator in:

  • Managing future acts matters, including the negotiation of land access and heritage agreements;
  • The implementation of Native Title agreements and Indigenous Land Use Agreements; and
  • The support and management of key matters and projects relating to protection of Thalanyji Native Title, Culture and Heritage.

Position Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Future Acts Matters

  • Management of Future Acts notices and National Native Title Tribunal Processes;
  • Monitoring land access and heritage agreements; and
  • Assist in the negotiation of major future acts and land access matters as required.

2. Implementation of Native Title Agreements

  • Co-ordinate key cultural and heritage projects, as required;
  • Liaise with and assist native title and heritage advisors, other relevant service providers as required;
  • Assist in the development of systems to enable the long-term management and storage of native title and heritage information;
  • Coordination of other environmental, heritage or cultural matters as required; and
  • Managing processes around BTAC Publication requests.

3. Participation as a member of the Heritage and Culture Team

  • Attend and contribute to Heritage & Cultural Committee meetings;
  • Participate in other projects, as required;
  • Report regularly to the Native Title Co-ordinator; and
  • Periodic travel to the Pilbara region.

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Familiarity with the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), the Mining Act 1978 (WA) and other relevant legislation.
  • Knowledge of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA).
  • Experience in monitoring compliance of agreements.
  • Ability to effectively engage in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a busy environment while managing conflicting demands.
  • Experience working in the Native Title Sector, or for an RNTB or PBC.
  • Ability to travel in regional and remote areas of the Pilbara.

Desirable

  • Qualification in archaeology, anthropology, project management or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated native title, future acts and heritage experience.
  • An understanding of the cultural, social and economic circumstances of Aboriginal people and remote communities.

Mandatory

  • ‘C’ Class Drivers Licence.
  • Capacity to obtain a Working with Children’s Check and Police Clearance.
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
