The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists for a Clinical Research Nurse to join our Viral Hepatitis Elimination team!

You will develop and deliver research, implementation science and evaluation programs to help achieve viral hepatitis elimination goals, including testing and treatment uptake in key populations and novel nurse-led models of care in community outreach settings.

The Burnet Viral Hepatitis Elimination group develop and explore research questions that may translate into better models of health care and service delivery. To this end, you will be providing direct clinical service provision such as interviews, liver fibrosis assessment and blood sample collection from individuals living with viral hepatitis or other blood borne viruses, some of whom may have vulnerable or marginalised backgrounds such as injecting drug use.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Identifying, screening, and consenting suitable participants to research projects in keeping with the study Protocol and the principles of ICH GCP
  • Direct clinical trial related care of participants
  • Data management - collecting and maintaining accurate records and data
  • Spending some time in the field which may include working from a mobile van; working in general practice; primary healthcare or other community service settings (eg needle syringe programs; pharmacies)
  • Undertaking community outreach work which may involve travel across greater Metropolitan Melbourne (ie Frankston, Melton) or across Regional Victoria (ie Geelong, Western Victoria, Gippsland and Murray regions) using work provided vehicles, or personal vehicle with cost reimbursement. At times, some flexibility with working hours will be required to match study requirements.
  • Participating in other research projects as required and contributing to the wider activities of the Burnet Institute

This position is initially for a 1-year period with the possibility of extension. 0.6 – 1.0 FTE will be considered. Part time working from home options and flexible working hours will also be provided.

Let’s talk about you

The following are essential criteria:

  • Current Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Authority (AHPRA)
  • Skilled in Phlebotomy (preferably with people who have challenging venous access)
  • Clinical knowledge related to blood borne viruses
  • Ability to problem solve complex issues and work autonomously
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills & interpersonal skills
  • Strong organisational and time management skills

The following criteria are preferable but not essential:

  • Accreditation in viral hepatitis and HIV pre and pos-test counselling
  • Completion of ICH GCP training and/or Clinical Research experience
  • Experience working with marginalized populations in community settings
  • Ability to write and submit study abstracts and present findings at conferences
  • Skilled in Liver Fibrosis Assessment including transient elastrography (FibroScan)
