The Opportunity

This is an exciting new role within the Burnet Diagnostic Initiative (BDI)! You will have the opportunity to project manage and coordinate commercialisation of our innovative point of care assays and therapeutic applications. You will work in a diverse team alongside talented scientists, our business development and commercialisation team, and manage projects in alignment with industry standards with reference to regulatory requirements.

This role will contribute to the improvement of the BDI’s impact through commercialising intellectual property and research outcomes. This includes identifying research to be licensed and providing expert advice on commercialisation to BDI researchers. You will build internal and external networks to identify opportunities for research commercialisation, market research and building a business case. Assistance in applying for funding from a variety of sources is also key to the position.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Managing commercialisation and translation of Intellectual Property, achieving objectives and deliverables in line with the BDI and Burnet Institute strategy
  • Helping to manage the identification, evaluation and potential translation of particular ideas, research programs and technologies
  • Helping to report on the outputs and impact of BDI projects, including preparing proposals, briefing papers and reports, and developing innovative communication techniques
  • Managing the BDI portfolio of product development projects
  • Defining project objectives, project scope, project deliverables, roles & responsibilities
  • Defining resource requirements and managing resource availability & budgetary requirements
  • Managing delivery of the project according to the plan in conjunction with laboratory manager
  • Ensuring that quality management forms and records are used as intended and completed as required
  • Providing the interface between academics, business development and research translation staff, building strong networks

This is a full-time permanent position. Flexible working hours and working from home options will also be provided.

Let’s talk about you

The ideal candidate will have previously worked in the in vitro diagnostic, pharmaceutical or other biotechnology-based industry.

The following criteria are essential:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field
  • Professional skill and knowledge of research translation, commercialisation, and market research
  • Demonstrated success in negotiating commercial and legal arrangements for research translation
  • Demonstrated skills in building internal and external networks in relation to research translation and commercialisation of intellectual property
  • Demonstrated understanding of higher education and/or public sector research in relation to research translation and/or commercialisation
  • Experience with project management software tools
  • Proven working experience in project management
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple priorities, work under pressure, and meet deadlines

The following experience is preferable:

  • Masters or PhD in relevant field
  • Diploma of Project Management
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Knowledge of laboratory compliance standards
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks for in vitro diagnostic medical devices
  • Strong understanding of the design and development of diagnostic assays
  • Knowledge of human ethics and cGCP training
  • Knowledge of Institutional Biosafety Committee frameworks and associated legislation
