The Byron Community Centre is a not for profit organisation, entirely self-funded through donations, income and project grants. These funds are used to support vulnerable people and offer a range of arts and social programs for the benefit of the whole community.

For over 40 years, the Byron Community Centre has played a key role in establishing and hosting a range of projects, services and events for locals and visitors including Byron markets and Byron Theatre.

Position Summary

The Breakfast Coordinator works with volunteers to provide nutritious breakfasts, between 7-9 am, five days a week, at the Fletcher Street Cottage, for people who are sleeping rough.

As the Breakfast Coordinator, you will source food through our partnership with Liberation Larder, liaising with their volunteers to plan and accept deliveries, purchasing additional requirements as needed. You will plan and prepare meals, coordinate serving and organise clean up.

You will be responsible for ensuring safe food handling procedures and for purchasing and maintenance of equipment.

You will be responsible for coordinating a volunteer team, including rostering and for your team to engage with service users, in a warm and empathetic manner, building relationships that support on-going engagement at the cottage.

The Breakfast Coordinator will be an active team member assisting in building a safe, respectful and welcoming environment at Fletcher Street Cottage for all visitors and contributing to strengthening a cohesive culture with the staff team, students, and all volunteers.

Key Accountabilities

Promote and follow the vision and values of Fletcher Street Cottage (FSC) and the Byron Bay Community Association within a collaborative and inclusive framework.

  • Coordinate homeless breakfasts, 5 days a week for FSC, including preparation, serving and clean up.

  • Procure food and plan meals, minimising waste.

  • Document and ensure safe food handling procedures, including inducting and training volunteers and providing relevant information to the wider staff team.

  • Build and maintain a good working relationship with volunteers at Liberation Larder and organise the receiving of food donations from them.

  • Work with Liberation Larder in line with our partnership agreement, staying within identified roles and communicating appropriately with the broader community about our partnership arrangements.

  • Establish extra food purchasing processes and delivery, including accounts, payments and associate financial management.

  • Work to build upon the operational functioning of the FSC kitchen and serving area, ensuring furniture, equipment and fittings are maintained in line with quality standards.

  • Provide a breakfast service which is grounded in cultural sensitivity, restorative and trauma informed practice.

  • Communicate and connect with service users in ways which are most likely to build on-going engagement.

  • Maintain timely and accurate data collection and contribute to review and evaluation mechanisms.

  • Actively participate as a Fletcher Street Cottage team member, openly sharing information, aiming for group cohesion and supporting the vision.

  • Contribute to strengthening a welcoming, respectful and inclusive FSC culture, including supporting and working with volunteers and students.

  • Engage in continuous improvement, reflection and learning.

  • Undertake activities outside of usual role and normal position description as required.

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience

  • Ability to operate and run a kitchen, preparing and serving meals

  • Sound knowledge and experience of safe food handling practices

  • Well developed communication and interpersonal skills,with the ability to coordinate a team of volunteers to deliver a breakfast program

  • Ability to work independently, managing own time with minimal supervision and to work collaboratively as part of a team

  • Ability to be empathetic and understanding with vulnerable individuals and families and people with complex needs and/or mental health issues

  • Ability to identify issues and concerns, to engage in reflective practice and to work within the team to solve problems and plan strategically.

  • Current Driver’s License

  • Current National Police Check

Desired Selection Criteria

  • Ability to manage conflict and aggressive behaviours

  • Understanding of the diversity of impacts of homelessness and trauma

  • Experience working with volunteers and students, including coaching and mentoring
