About the program

The objective of the Young Carer Bursary Program (YCBP) is to assist young carers aged 12 – 25 years in greatest need to continue to study, and to relieve the financial pressure for them to undertake part-time work in addition to their educational and caring responsibilities. The YCBP is funded through the Department of Social Services (DSS) to deliver 1000 bursaries to the value of $3,000 to young carers.

About the panel

The Independent Assessors for the YCBP are made up of young carers, academics and professionals with experience working with young people. Carers Australia is currently recruiting 6 new assessors to undertake the role from June – November 2021.

This is a short-term contract role and the workload and time commitment can be flexible to work around other work and family commitments. Carers Australia will host a team session in July/August 2021 with the successful panel members to ensure the panel understands their role and the processes involved. After the YCBP applications are received, each panel member will be allocated around 300 applications individually to review, assess and recommend approval for the YCBP.

Remuneration

This is a paid role with the successful candidates being engaged as a consultant and will receive payment upon receipt of a tax invoice. The successful candidates will not become an employee of Carers Australia.

This role attracts payment in accordance with the Commonwealth Remuneration Tribunal’s scale of fees. The successful people will be engaged as consultants and paid on receipt of a tax invoice. The successful candidates will not be employees of Carers Australia.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria that the successful candidates will need to meet includes:

  • Good levels of digital literacy

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience working in a team environment

  • Australian citizenship or permanent resident

  • Must hold or be willing to obtain a Working with Vulnerable Persons Registration

This role will suit a team player who enjoys working collaboratively and has experience of being a young carer, a professional academic in social sciences, psychology, social work or youth studies or a professional who has worked with young people and young carers throughout their role.

Duties of Panel Members

  • Approving the required number of bursary applications, this includes ranking an additional 20% for the reserve list.

  • Fostering collaboration with other panel members and Carers Australia staff.

  • Maintaining the focus and intent of the above stated purpose.

  • Notifying other panel members as soon as practical if any matter arises that may be deemed a conflict of interest or will affect the panel decision-making process.

  • Making the final decision regarding the awarding of the bursaries.

  • Providing feedback to Carers Australia on any improvements they feel may assist in the assessment process.
