Carers WA is the peak body representing the needs and interests of carers in Western Australia and is part of a national network of Carers Associations. Carers provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have disability, mental illness, a chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol, or other drug issue or who are frail aged.

The Carer Gateway Support Officer will provide carer focused services and consult with carers to identify their goals and ensure that an appropriate support plan is prepared, implemented, and evaluated. This position will be also responsible for the coordination and administration of financial and business functions required to support the referral and the delivery of services to carers.

The Carer Gateway Support Officer is a multi-faceted, team orientated role and undertakes a combination of duties including administration, budgeting, contractor engagement and some scheduling; so being adaptive to change and being flexible in how work is undertaken, and excellent communication skills are a prerequisite.

Carers Gateway is a relatively new program and was established by Carers WA following the award of a tender to be the lead Regional Delivery Partner in Western Australia. This position will become part of a growing team of approximately 40 - 45 staff members. You will be required to work successfully in a collaborative, inclusive team environment and communicate professionally and empathetically with Carers. The position will also be required to liaise with a wide range of partner organisations to raise awareness of carers within the broader community as well as internal stakeholders and provide support across all teams within the Carer Gateway program.

Essential Selection Criteria

  1. A relevant qualification or significant experience in Community / Health Services, Social Sciences, Psychology, Social Work or Business.
  2. Demonstrated experience with assessments, coordination of services and referral processes.
  3. Able to multitask, managing several priorities and actions, working across different teams when required and willingness to work flexibly including active participation in change management.
  4. Proven competence with person centred practice supporting individuals to increase independence, participation, and wellbeing.
  5. Understanding of Aboriginal, CALD and LGBTIQ individuals and communities.
  6. Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
  7. Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  8. Demonstrated experience in administration/business processes with high level computer skills including proficiency with MS office including Excel, CRM and/or customised client databases as well as high level of Admin skills including fast and accurate entering data.
  9. Ability to utilise technology such as laptops, computers, or mobile phones to communicate with others (Skype, Zoom) with ability to problem solve.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the intake, planning and support function of carers in compliance with Department of Social Services guidelines and as required within the Carer Gateway team.
  • Actively participate in ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
  • Engage in reflective practice within a team environment and actively participate in supervision.
  • Comply with organisational policies and current good practice.
  • Maintain and develop comprehensive knowledge and strong understanding of funded and non-funded service providers, services options, and support agencies.
  • Ensure all scheduled activities are undertaken in accordance with responsibilities and accountabilities within the allocated time frames.
  • Assist co-workers to learn and develop and assist when they are having difficulty.
  • Liaise across all internal and external stakeholder teams.
  • Proactively seeking to address issues/concerns as they may occur.
  • Assist with and undertake other duties as determined by the Program Manager and Team Leader.
